Hey all!

I got a 180-t-stat from here: http://www.3800performance.com.....ct_Count=1

when it came in i showed it to my mechanic friend, and he told me not to put it in the car, because it didnt have a 'fail safe' mode i think he said, that it could damage my engine because there wasnt this extra spring that pops open.

figured i'd ask on here if anyone agrees before i get a different one, or if this one is OK? (im sure some of you have seen or have this)

Thanks!

If it doesn't get stuck open when it fails, don't be a fool and let the car overheat. You'll be fine :p

You are also going too need to change the fan settings to get the full effect.

Agreed. That t-stat is likely a reboxed duralast like the one I got from autozone. It's been in my car for close to 2 years.

OK so i got the 180 T-stat (bought a more expensive one with the fail safe feature) and installed it, new coolant and seals, no leaks.

Anyway drove the car about 30 miles and i noticed the temperature gauge wasnt registering at all.

10 miles more and the check engine light came on. and im thinking CRAP!

Shut off the car, went to the hood, and noticed a whirring noise like a fan on. This remained on (the key was out of the ignition) for about 2 minutes then shut off.

Restarted the car after a little break and the check engine light was still on. Turned the car off and that fan was still humming inside the engine for about 2 minutes after the car was off.

Im pretty confused by this - any possible knowledge from anyone? I'll probably end up taking it in but if anyone has a clue whats going on that would be very awesome Smile

T-Stat shouldn't affect that, your temperature sensor probably went bad.

When they go bad / aren't registering your PCM commands a fail safe mode since the car doesn't know how hot the engine actually is. This makes the fans go on, and stay on after key-off.

How well did you bleed your system after you changed the t-stat?
