2003 Chevrolet Impala

PostPosted: Sat Feb 11, 2012 4:33 pm    Post subject:  Safe to leave MAF sensor Unplugged? Reply with quote

I have been having issues with sluggish acceleration and poor idle at start up (sometimes shaking violently, then stalling out) and read that a bad MAF could be the culprit. After inspecting it (it looked clean) I cleaned it anyway and reinstalled it with no improvement.

I then tried leaving the MAF unplugged and the car seems to be performing better, though it still has occasional start up troubles.
I would like to know how long it is safe to leave the MAF unplugged.

I'd like to buy a replacement but a new Delco one is too pricey right now and the off brand rebuilds seem to be a crap shoot. Any suggestions on an affordable replacement that will work?

Thanks

It's intended to be a diagnostic tool and a short term solution (like a few days max). See if anyone here has a used OEM MAF to sell you and if not give Morad Parts a call and they will send you a low mileage MAF for something like 75 bucks.

$75 bucks eh? Do the Cardone or Python injection ones work well with the 3.4?

EDIT: The reason I'm asking is I cleaned my MAF last night, went to drive it today and I went to get on the highway from a stop ( gave it about 3/4 throttle) got up to 30mph and the car died. I pulled over and it started up after a couple of tries. Took off same thing. So I decided to unplug the MAF and the car ran great.... I guess I ***** it up. Evil or Very Mad

I just ordered a used MAF off E-bay for 29.99. Of course it's going to be a few days or so until I get it.

Okayyyy. So for the hell of it I took apart my old MAF and cleaned it thoroughly and what do you know it's working fine again. Rolling Eyes I still have a 3.4 MAF I bought on E-bay on the way so if anybody is interested I'll sell it too them. It's a all sale are final item so I can't send it back.

Same here. Cleaning mine would be good for a few days, maybe a few weeks before it would act up again.
