How much longer should I keep pushing this until it blows up on me on the highway?

2003 LS.
260,000 miles.

Rebuilt transmission, new exhaust system, new AC system, the control arms and joints are getting replaced piece by piece as they go bad, thinking about getting my shocks and struts replaced, new belts..

I can keep putting money into it year by year but I feel like I am just waiting for something major to blow on me.

At what point is dumping money into it a waste because I am just fixing minor things as I wait for it all to be a waste because oh hey, I might have new struts and a nice ride but the head gasket blew my engine melted down.

It's a 3800 correct? If so, I believe with everything else you've replaced, there's really nothing else you can do until the 3.8 gives out..or the body falls off the car.

Yup, 3800.

The only thing wrong with the car at this moment is the inside is pretty worn down but I really don't care about looks for the most part.

Going to replace the headlight enclosures in the next month, tried to sand the stock ones but they are so crummy that there is no saving them.

I have noticed though that a cold start on the car will sometimes not start it, it will turn over and start but not stay on. Turning the key a second time starts it right up with no issue.

Mine does this too from time to time. The car actually shakes a good bit while it does this. Other wise it runs well.

I think all 3800's do this.. Rolling Eyes Especially on a warm start, sometimes will sputter and then almost stall, and then be fine. Seems like a hiccup when it first starts. I've already replaced all the possible things, IAC, MAF, TPS, PCV, MAP, FPR. I just live with it's little hiccups every once in awhile, because other than that she purrs like a kitten and has never been unreliable.

I just have the 3400. I have cleaned my MAF replaced my IAC for other reasons and got a new PCV. All of these replacements were unrelated to this issue though. It runs fine so I'm not to worried about it. Although my CEL came back on last night. Evil or Very Mad

It's okay!

IAC = Idle Air Control valve
MAF = Mass Air Flow Sensor
TPS = Throttle Position Sensor
PCV = Positive Crankcase Ventilation
MAP = Manifold Absolute Pressure
FPR = Fuel Pressure Regulator

my impala starts up very quickly, like 1-2 turns and its up and running, a new battery and starter would remedy any long start issues. as long as everything else has been done, plugs,wires,fuel filter etc etc.
but i do agree on a hot summer day and the car is all warmed up if i start it run in and out of a store in 30 seconds it hiccups and stall sometimes, not every time though,when is start it back up no issue.
that might change now that got pcm tuned and running 180* t stat. just waiting for the warmer weather.

260,000 miles? Wow! I hope mine lasts that long, then again is is a 3400. Are the lifespan of the 3.8's that much longer than the 3400's? I say drive it till it dies.

At 260k I'd say job well done and drive it until you end up with a repair that you would set you back a significant amount of money.

Keep it until the point where it needs a fix that's costly enough that you'd rather make monthly payments than take your chances with another costly repair.

Cars will last you if you take care of them are you're tolerant of the odd inconvenience when something fails. Far more often than not, people trade their cars in early, eating tons of depreciation and taking on a new car payment on a newer vehicle where they get to eat even more depreciation, just to avoid being inconvenienced occasionally with an issue.
