Today I just had my CEL checked by Autozone and this is the code it came up with. Due to defective Catalytic Converter. But could it also be caused by an O2 sensor malfunctioning and not reading well as I've seen explained on http://www.obd-codes.com/p0420?????? Or do these cars just s**t out cats and that's all there is to it? It's really stressing me right now because I really can't afford a new cat and I'm hoping there is a more simpler (cheaper) fix. Are the 3.4s susceptible to cat failures as well? I'm hoping someone has had experience with this and can point me in the right direction.

P0420 is for the O2 sensor after the cat. All that the code is telling you is that the cat is flowing "out of spec". Could be flowing better or worse, sets the same code.

I would have the cat tested at a shop. If its ok and the sensor is crapping out, you can either replace the sensor or get an aftermarket PCM with the code deleted.

If it is the sensor, it wont have any negative effects on the car. Its only there to tell you if the cat is working within spec. It will however, make you fail inspection if you have it in your area.

Ah excellent. I see. I was confused a little about the codes and there designations. So a new sensor should suffice? The car runs great otherwise. I can get the cat tested no problem as well.

Without further tests you are guessing on what the problem is. I'd get the cat tested, that'll tell you how to proceed.

Gotcha. I'll set up an appointment tomorrow with my regular shop I go too. Hopefully it's NOT the cat but we'll see. Thanks for the assistance guys. Cool

If you do need a new cat, I believe that the GM ones are the best option for our cars. I think other aftermarket ones cause problems. I only say this because I read that on here somewhere before. And @ 177+++ miles I'm on my fourth cat. Last one was about five years ago and it got replaced with a GM one.

ZSPOT...while that's brought up how much are the cat's going for these days for a 3.4?

Well last night I was driving and the car felt like is was missing real bad on the highway. It did this for probably 2 minutes and then the CEL went out and it drove fine. Confused Confused Confused What's the deal with that? I'm going see if I can get it in today for the cat test.

I have the same code. I had my cat replaced because my car started having no power. There is a leak somewhere as I can hear whooshing air near the firewall when I drive. Now the car has power but its intermittent and the shifts are off. ITs very strange, I think just by my own reasoning that there is either a clog in my system still or a bad connect somewhere between the manifold, DP, cat, or resonator. I still have the code and need to get it fixed...If I had a lift Id try to tinker with it, maybe replace some exhaust gaskets, but I dont want to get under the car on ramps im afraid of getting crushed. mIm going to take it to a shop eventually but I've had such bad luck around here with mechanics im just waiting.

I don't know about the 3.4, but when mine died the dealer tried to charge me 600 for a new one on my 3.8 (conveniently forgetting about the special policy adjustment on my car until I reminded them).

Kind of depends on the year. For your 2001, $794.29 retail price. On the 2005 in question, $750.04 retail.

I can offer some relief, but then we run into a core charge issue. Rolling Eyes

I have the 3.4 Z. Is there a difference between that and 3.8? Would it be cheaper?

The $750 is for your 2005. The converters for the 3800 are a couple hundred bucks cheaper. Imagine that. Laughing

Go figure. Sad The car still has no CEL as of the other night. I actually thoroughly cleaned the TB for the hell of it and the car runs superb. Could have been a fluke and just needed the exhaust blown out a little? To be quite honest I DO NOT have that kind of money right now.
