Just got these off of craigslist for 40$, pretty sweet deal although I'd say they're in a 7-10 shap, no deep scratches and no cracks. Looking to paint them body color, there is just some 3m tape residue on there as well as some what appears to be some type of glue or something.. Was wondering what would be ideal to take that off, since some off the "glue" is over the circle part where I have to cover up with transparent tape. Also should I just use 200 grit sand paper? I plan to take my sweet time with these since they're an extra pair..
Thought I'd throw in a recent pic as well, got an indy grill coming sometime next week too..
Goo-Gone will probably help get rid of the adhesive.
200 Sounds very coarse. If you intend to paint them like LS Sport/SS covers, I would sand them down to 800-1000 grit or even wetpaper, then sand the areas to to painted with something a little coarser... 400 or 600 maybe.
So you suggest I even sand the pieces that won't be painted?
I was assuming you were going to paint them like LS/SS taillights. In that case, the only part not being painted are the circles and side area of the left and right peices. But if they're beaten up a little in the areas that won't be covered with paint, I would (personally) sand them with very fine sandpaper/wetpaper to make 'em look nice.
Areas to be painted: 400-600 grit (probably).
Areas to be unpainted: 800-1000 or wetpaper.
In a bit of a dilemma, turns out dupli color perfect match doesn't make an over the counter can for capp frost metallic.. I'm at a bit.of a stand still, curious if I should just pay a shop to do it now. I found a website that sells a 12.5 fl oz can for 25$!!! And with shipping it comes to 32$ for the basecoat... Any ideas.how much a shop would charge? Or any other plausible option?
***** Was able to sand them down and Cover them with transparent, took forever to find that damn thing, anyways I also sold my old rims tonight, So I think i'll just quote around for a shop to spray them, since they shouldn't need any prep work.***
Well I'd like an opinion from somebody on here that actually does paint work, my grandpa and a few friends in my hometown can paint em with a spray gun, but that's 150mi away and its snowing up here. If anything I'll order the damn 35$ can and do it myself... :/
Even if they did have to, 250 is a joke, and when I was waiting in the lobby, very tiny btw he was talking with a customer that wanted his 98 suburban painted and they quoted him 400 for just a basecoat of black.... So I'm paying over 1/2 that for tails? Ughhh...

Lol might be awhile, I just left a shop and they quoted me 250 even with them preped, I laughed and left...
Hopefully you have more than one body shop. I was quoted $100 to paint mine.
With the color of your car, no matter how much you pay for a rattle can, you'll never get an exact match. I'd keep looking for a shop to custom match your paint and spray it.
X2 I paid $100 for the tail covers an door handle... ask around, you might have to ship them somewhere to be painted by a reputable shop
