You really gotta up your game if you want to lower the car.... this is worse than cutting the springs! Laughing

I had that happen on my 99 Grand-Am with less than 60k miles on it at the time. The passenger rear broke exactly as pictured, I only noticed it when I replaced the tires. Two months later the passenger front spring broke, bending the strut plate, which sent the spring into the sidewall of my new tire. That was the last straw for that POS car, I sold it a few weeks later Evil or Very Mad

I had a 99 Grand Am as well and it blew the passenger-front spring too. Happened when my wife was backing out of the driveway and sounded like a gunshot when it blew. Scared the crap out of me. The car was stuck half-in-the-street until the tow-truck could get there. It bent the strut plate and ripped up the tire.

That was one of many things that went wrong with that car, including the LIM gasket (it was a 3400 after all) and 2nd gear dying at 125,000 miles (which prompted me to sell the car). It was thoroughly unreliable, but it was actually a really fun car to drive. I do kinda miss it.

The LIM gasket was the only thing that didn't go on it (it was the next thing that went on the person who bought it from me though). I rarely had to fill the tank with gas because I was always getting it towed home Laughing if it had 125k on it I would have expected it, but I bought it with 40k miles and sold it with 63k.

I don't miss it one bit. Spawn of Satan, that car was.

I've never broken a spring but it occurred to me that if I did, I might just throw a pair of Monroe Quick Struts on it and be done with it. Particularly if it was a daily driver like my Impala which probably needs struts anyway.

Not real sure...the wife tells me she thought she heard a "pop" sometime last week. She did not really see any difference in performance so she never said anything to me about it.

So far this has been the only real major fix on the car.Other than that it runs and drives awesome.I think the car has around 129K on it, w/ 120 of that being "police service" miles.

Had that exact issue as well on our 01 Seville last year. Wife was taking a corner and heard it break though. I was dumbfounded, as i had never seen that before either. I had the dealer fix it, don't recall the price, but they changed both sides (front).

This post was bad luck; I read it and the next day had the passenger side front spring break.

I decided to tackle the job myself and bought a spring compressor for around 100$. I replaced the front pair took around 4 or 5 hours, with the second spring only taking maybe an hour and a half.

Places like autozone usually let you rent a spring compressor for like 6 bucks. Is this some sort of fancy unit? The rented ones are pretty basic items.

I had that happen last winter.

backing out of the drive heard the loud sound. The neighbor across the street was out side and he heard it.
I di da walk around and couldn't find it.. The car drove normal except for a rattle in the front end. About 2 weeks later I found the spring piece . Junk yard was able to supply me with a used pair.
