Just finished the swap, went well except we ran into some transmission issues. My dad drove the 2002 to work this morning so that he could inspect it. On the way there he said it was slipping all over the place, from a dead stop, and when trying to accelerate. At 178k miles he said it's done and I'm stopping by our local NC Transmission tomorrow after school (already spoke to him - hes aware of the flaws in 4T65E transmissions) to get a quote. I'm going to ask him exactly what he replaces, and ask about installing a shift kit as well.

To those that are very well educated with these transmissions and what needs to be replaced when rebuilt, could you educate me some? I want to go there with a head on my shoulders knowing what to say, and what to make sure that they replace/inspect/repair.

ANY information is appreciated. Thanks! I'll be going there tomorrow after school. (12:56 PM EST)

Well this sucks. Mad Sorry for all the luck you're having. You'll get it sorted out though. Did they quote ya for a rebuild?

When we initially talked to the owner, he quoted about $1500 - $2000 max. It does suck, yes indeed it does. But in a way I'm glad it's not working right, because if it was working perfectly and then in 200 miles blew up my dad would try and put the blame on me (joking around of course, but still). So, we'll have it rebuilt, and I'll be happy to say I'll probably be driving this car for the next 4 years; hopefully longer.

Just a thought here. A GM reman transmission runs about $1900 and comes with a 3yr, 100,000 mile warranty.

We already thought about those, but being that a GM Reman still has all the issues we're going to go with a rebuild. Is it $1900 labor included? I stopped at the place after school and they rebuild the valve body, replace all solenoids, clutches, hardened 4th clutch, new torque converter, and they do indeed install a shift kit.. This shop gives us a 3 year 45k mile warranty. Me and my dad are about to leave and drop the car off at the place, guy said a turn around time of about 3-4 days.

I believe that is just for the transmission. I went to my dealer and in all it should be around $2400 for me including labor. can't go wrong with a 100k mile warranty though.

The clutches are practically galvanized cardboard.

Well, I called them today and got some info about what they found. They tore it down yesterday and today they ordered parts, and they came in today as well. The reverse band and the 2nd gear band were completely worn out and they found an abnormal amount of clutch material/hard parts on the pan. They are doing a complete overhaul and I'm picking it up on Tuesday the 22nd!

That'll cause the transmission to mess up for sure lol. Yea the clutch material won't be attracted to the magnet in the pan.

I bet you can't wait to get her back!

You have no idea....This 160hp 4banger is pathetic! I love everything about my Impala and I cannot wait to be able to drive her once again! I just hope I don't have to worry about transmission problems for a long ass time!

The one thing I do love about the subaru is the AWD....on my way back to school today from lunch I was running late so I took one of the shortcuts that take you directly infront of the school (all dirt and gravel and bumpy) that I took with my Impala once (NEVER AGAIN) and I did 50mph on it without a problem! All wheel drive is awesome! haha

If you're getting the upgrades you should be fine for a long time man! I would change the transmission fluid every 25k miles imo.

These engines are bullet proof and with an upgraded transmission, you'll be driving that car until Judgement Day lol

I sure as hell hope so! We are going to do a pan drop and filter change every 10k miles, we've already decided. Too often can't hurt. We haven't had to really do anything to the 3800 motor we dropped in (LIM/UIM Gaskets, waterpump and a new idler pulley, and oil pan gasket) in 121k miles is the only maintenance we've had to do to that motor.

I plan on driving this car throughout college and for a bit after college. I know I'll have this car till like 2016 and the W-Body platform will practically be dead by then haha.

Same with me man! I'm 23 years old and drive to Chicago every day for college and since it's all highway miles, I should have her for a long time!

Nice to see young people like us have a passion for W-Body Impalas!

I haven't even graduated from high school yet! I'm 17, senior in high school. Every one of my friends know how much I love my car and how stingy I am about keeping it spotless and clean. This was my first car and I can't see moving to a different model car.
