I want to upgrade to the HD diff in my car. I don't know a hell of alot about transmissions, so I have a few questions. I a understand that upgrading my non HD trans with an HD diff will give me 3.29 gearing, and this will help my acceleration. I know I need the diff, diff cover, and passenger side axle for this upgrade. Do I need anything else? What will I need to do to make sure the PCM plays nice with this upgrade? I'm headed to a u-pull on wednesday and I hope to find the parts I need. Is there any way to tell a HD trans from a non HD trans so I don't end up with a non HD diff? Also, I plan on doing a shift kit while I'm at it. What type of trans fluid is reccomended and how much should I buy? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Just found this thread. The video linked in it is pretty decent to, and explains and shows everything fairly well. It looks like it's pretty simple, actually.

Whoever you buy the PCM from, you would have to specify the gear ratio you need when ordering. It should be one of the options they ask (along with VIN, O2, EGR, etc). If you buy one off the shelf from a vendor, you will need a trip to the dealer for a CASE learn, if you send yours in, then its plug & play.

Thanks for the info. So while I'm at the yard, the trans from any l67 or l32 should be a suitable donor, assuming it is in decent shape?

I got the diff out of a 97 regal gs.. I'll probably put it in next spring when I can afford a tune.. I am 99% sure it is the HD diff because the passenger side axle was shorter than the one on the impala next to it.
