Well, I autocrossed my Impala yesterday at Cherry Valley Motorsports Park. It was a CNY SCCA Solo event, my first ever, and I had an incredible time! Alot of nice cars showed up, everyone was really friendly. It was an enduro event, each car got four minutes to complete as many laps as possible, and there were two heats. I came in 2nd in my class surprisingly, beating a lotus elise, a porsche carerra, and a few other cars I thought the old boat had no chance against. The results are posted on the CNY-SCCA website.

class results: http://cny-scca.com/results.ph.....2011_10_09

PAX results: http://cny-scca.com/results.ph.....p;pax=true

staging.. I ended up with the same time as the S2000

Nice work!

I'm not sure why cars like an NSX, Elise, 330 or 335xi are posting times so near to yours. You haven't done more work than in your signature, have you?

What is the 'factor' in the PAX results?

I would love to autocross, but have to admit that I'd never do it in the Impala. Laughing

I believe all of my mods are listed in my sig. I'm running Yokohama Advan S.4's. PAX time is explained here: http://www.autocross.us/forums.....topic=1628 If you look in the total time column, that is my raw average lap time. It's a really tight course, and I really drove the car HARD. It was mostly in first gear, barely getting into second on the straights. I think that might've been my advantage, the manual cars were all running in second for the entire course. Also, I really payed attention to the line I was taking, and how late I could wait to get on the brakes. It seemed like some of the guys in the nicer cars weren't taking the greatest lines, which I think is really important and may be why I did so good compared to them.

I was expecting your times to be horrendous in comparison to the other cars in your class. Well done.

Thanks! I thought it would be horrendous as well but it was a nice surprise seeing the results. I'm doing a DIY shift kit soon, I'm afraid the transmission didn't like this adventure as much as I did.

Proof that in the correct hands, an Impala can easily hold it's own. And at less than half the price tag of a "sports" car.

I wouldn't go that far. If you put outonthetiles into the cars that he beat, my guess is those times would shed a few seconds as well. The converse is true, put one of those drivers in the Impala and it's time would skyrocket.

Of course, there are plenty of stories of Miatas running circles around Vettes and Vipers at the track. A lot of the time does come down to the driver, but it also relies on the type of circuit you're on.

Ie; an Elise or Miata is not going to fare well against big-displacement, high--horesepower monsters on a speed/power circuit, but would do better on a tight, handling circuit.

True, it all does depend on what kind of racing you are doing. From the pictures of the track, it looks like it is mostly curves, with some smaller straights. In all fairness, the cars he faced had much higher HP ratings, and are supposed to be "sports" cars, with an emphasis on being a well rounded, powerful, handling machine. Everyone claims the Impala is not that great of a handler, but why is a car that cost $6000 laying the smackdown on exotics that cost much more? The Impala isn't a bad handler. You just have to know how to make it work.

Oh, and congrats on taking 12th, overall. For your first time racing, in a cheap old boat, that's pretty darn impressive.

It's not a great vehicle handling wise... anyone with half a brain will acknowledge that. Sure the OP has made handling upgrades (as most of us that are/were serious into modding the platform do). However, all the results from this competition show is that the OP is a better than average driver among other people new to autocross in his class didn't know how to drive their own vehicles.

Not to mention, his car isn't GS class because he has a GMPP handling kit which immediately precludes him from running in the stock category. I don't want to diminish his accomplishment, but outside of the handicapped PAX scores, if he actually ran in ST (which is where the car belongs after a quick read through the regulations) he would be a back marker. He was a second and half slower than the ST cars that ran the same track on the same day...

I'm not trying to belittle the OP, if he has fun doing it that's all that matters, but taking these results in an attempt to inflate your opinion of the Impala's handling abilities is a poor choice.

I laughed a little when I saw this post, and even more when I saw the pictures. Not because I think it's dumb, I actually appreciate this as it gives me hope. But the impala is a big car, and it looks like it's gonna eat the s2000.

I like my Impala. Just got done putting some steel braided brake lines on it. Very Happy

If you play enough Forza and/or Gran Turismo, you'll kick ass at the track. Laughing

You're right, I probably should've been in the ST class, but I disclosed my mods to the officials and they told me what class to be in. Regardless of whatever the PAX time was, the unaltered times were still on the score sheet and that is what I am proud of. Honestly, I was just there to have a good time. I didn't expect to run as good as I did, and I was really surprised at the results.. I am going to try to compete some more next season.
