My fuel gauge is not reading properly on my 2004 Impala. Any ideas?

Possibly a stepper motor, possibly normal operation... what are the symptoms its producing?

The needle as you saw in the picture is never in the right position. In fact it is always in a different position when I start the car.

My Impala does not have a stepper motor for the fuel gauge. The problem is the float sensor valve, but thanks for the help everyone. Very much appreciated

Actually, every 2000-2005 (and 2006-2012 for that matter) has a stepper motor in the cluster for the fuel gauge...
