2001 Chevrolet Impala

PostPosted: Thu Sep 15, 2011 8:16 am    Post subject:  Ignition Issue Reply with quote

Over the past few weeks, I have noticed my car has had problems starting. When I attempt to turn my key and crank the motor, nothing happens. Everything electronic goes dark and nothing electronic works, like I am actually cranking the car, but nothing actually happens.

This occurs during different times of the day, and it will happen on a cold start or after just turning off the car.

Is this an ignition issue or something else? I really can't go see a mechanic because it is an intermittent problem, and we all know it'll NEVER happen when it's in the shop, so I'm asking for help from the community Smile

Thanks a lot!

I think this has something to do with the ignition lock cylinder. The contacts get corroded or dirty over time it doesn't make good confection. IIRC, I think you can pull it out and clean it without too much fuss.

again in the old trucks it would point to the ignition switch, as its the object that sends the signal. the lock connects to this. the lock turns a part of the switch and sends the signal to the starter

So how would I go about cleaning those contacts? Come at it from underneath or do I need to remove the dash?

Any and all instructions would be appreciated!

It's far more likely that you passlock sensor in the ignition cylinder is flaky if you are having intermittent starting issues

A bad ignition switch usually doesn't cause a no crank condition

Also, have your battery tested to make sure it's not on the way out

Thanks for all the useful ideas as to what might actually be wrong.

Now, how do I go about testing out these items without having to pay an arm and a leg to a shop or wasting money on useless parts?

did think about the security part of the lock. but that would be number one and then the switch if its contacts are not making the best connection it can cause the no start. Cant help you on the testing but 160 for the cylinder wth

Have you washed your motor recently? or ran through any deep puddles? Just trying to rule that out.

Most autoparts stores will test your battery for free.My wifes Impala had a simular issue and it turned out to be the battery,

Good luck and keep us posted.
