Alas I am tired of my cluster being half burnt out and gauges not working. I already made one 3500 round trip road trip without it, and I don't really want to make another.

So here is the deal. I a have a 04 LS. I am going to re solder the the stepper motors and solder in led. I am going to go with blue on everything but the rpm, which is red. While I am doing this I am going to go ahead and do the climate controls blue with red indicator.

I am familiar with bbengineer's posts, pictures, etc, as well as hotsauce's on led conversions.

Here are my questions.

Is http://www.superbrightleds.com...../267/1194/ the right led for my task? I know I will need to put a resistor on it.

Secondly, how many lights are needed? I know 4 red on the indicators, but how many for the red for the rpm, and blue for the rest of the cluster and climate control?

Third do I need to go ahead and get 4 stepper motors to replace all of my dash?

Thanks for all of the help and thanks to bbengineer and hot sauce for the information, diagrams, and pictures you have collectively posted.

The LED you posted is 2 things....Not bright enough and too much money.
The cluster I dont know how many lights you will need but for the controls you will need 6 LEDs i think

Also, there is 1 big light in the middle that you should use a 10mm led for.

You want an LED that is at least 10000 mCd

I know the SS/LSS cluster is 13 bulbs, not exactly sure about the ls cluster. Try buying them on ebay..if you buy them from china they take a while to get here, but you can get like25 led's for 10 bucks. Maybe more I can't remember exactly but thats what hotsauce and myself did.

SS/LSS cluster is 9 bulbs for backlighting, LS is 7 bulbs for backlighting.

There is no need for a 10mm in either cluster. I did it as test when I first did the conversion, but it doesn't provide any better lighting than a 5mm

Climate controls is 6 LEDs for backlighting (use two 5mm for the temp sliders, and four 3mm for other backlights) and 4 LEDs (3mm) for the button indicators (2000-2003 only, 2004-2005 are surface mount LEDs)

http://www.bbengineer.com/cars.....rlight.htm

Yes, the LS cluster has 4 stepper motors, the base has 3 stepper motors and the SS/LSS has 6 stepper motors

That diagram shows both the LS and SS locations, most are the same, but some are different

I have looked for LED's. I am going on a road trip in 15 days so I can't really order from overseas. It is difficult to find colored LED's with 10k-15k mcd & 20-30 angle. Are all of the angles 20-30 for cluster and climate control? What about for the 3mm specs?

Has anyone done an orange led for cluster?
http://www.kingbrightusa.com/p.....SEC/J4-AMT

Anyway does anyone have a US vendor for leds? I don't care about the resistors cause I can pick those up at radio shack.

Personal note, my stepfather is an ex electrician turned salesman. He used to work as an electrician on draglines and he will be doing the soldering for me ;p

Orange won't work on the cluster as the blue film in the overlays makes it look dim and brown

On a side note... an electrician isn't the best choice for doing intricate electronics soldering unless they have actual training in it... typically electricians (who's primary focus is high voltage AC IE: 120+VAC) don't work on delicate circuit boards

What is a good degree to use when it comes to LEDs? the wider the degree the better? I did my cluster awhile ago but I got the LED's off ebay and they're not really bright enough so I'm going to re-do it again with the correct MCd and degree LEDs.

I was looking at ordering these.

Do what BBE says in his write up, bench grind the top on the LEDs for a wider view of the light off the LED
