2012 Chevrolet Impala

Just found the forum and wanted to jump in and gain some knowledge. I will be looking to buy my daughter her 1st car in the near future and am considering an Impala somewhere in the 2002-2006 model year range. My son's first car was a Grand Am which is still serving him well. I like the style of the Impala for my daughter and know the cars share some similarities. I am looking to get an honest opinion on the Impala. What are some of its usual failures, I read a lot about instrument cluster failures, transmission issues, etc. I have done some work on the Grand Am myself (brakes, window regulators, multifuction switch) so I am not afraid of tacking some common repairs. I believe the lower intake manifold gasket problem plagued all of GM's V6 motors until they fixed it for the 2003 model year. The Pontiac used the 3400 motor and I think the Chevy has the 3800 and I think they shared the LIM problem. Thanks for any help and I am looking forward to becoming an active member.

The LIM issue was not fixed for all 2003 models - I have a 2003 and have done the LIM/UIM gaskets.

The Impala uses:
3.4 and 3.8 motors from 2000-2005

3.5, 3.9 and 5.3 motors from 2006-2009

some combination of the 3.5,3.9 and new 3.6 in the last couple years.

A post specifically made for common problems and fixes can be read here:

http://www.naioa.com/v2/module.....mp;start=0

I personally have experienced 6 of the listed issues. Some are a bit expensive to fix, some are cheap fixes. Certainly items are cheaper to fix when you do your own work.

Welcome to the forum!

Thanks for the welcome, Clifton, NJ here. The link for common problems is exactly what I was looking for. The scariest ones are the bad BCM, and transmission failure. Glad to have a detailed list when car shopping, thanks again.
