The black side skirt on the Imp started hanging from the pass car the other day.
So yesterday i decided to get some plugs and hold it in place. I found the front screw to be rusted out of the fender.
When I pulled the skirt off. The rocker panel from the rear to the front to be rotted out. No bottom to it....

She's goin down hill fast on me... May only get another winter out of it.

The Bonneville I had only made it to 12 years as well. Without undercoating or other forms of rust protection, the cars will rust out with a time frame like that...

Surprisingly when I had the cladding off mine in the spring it was still in good shape but I do see some rust gathering momentum under there. You have 3 years on my car though, wonder what mine will look like in 3 years ??

I know the feeling. The underbody of my Intrigue is looking pretty haggard. It's a good thing I only want to get another 2 years or so out of it and get rid of it when I leave Nashville.

She's been through a lot.

230,000 miles,
Head gaskets, suspension and a rear end collision.

My just put up for sale in spring for about 1000 and see what I get.

I can relate. The 2000 Ford CVPI that I just sold was so bad that you could kick the side skirt and rust would pepper the ground.

A '93 Cavalier. Pic was 2.5 years ago, so 16 yrs old at the time. 195,999.9 mi. I wanted to make it to 200k since I never had owned a car with that many miles before, but it just wasn't in the cards. The car was falling apart, and fast. It obviously was missing a little bit of sheet metal Laughing. It prolly wasn't too structurally safe anymore. The back was gone behind the bumper too. One good T-bone or rear-ending and I might not have made it out. She still ran like a champ though!

I hate that aspect of chevy's, the damn engine and drivetrain run forever, it's the rest of the car that craps the bed. What I don't understand is that in a spec sheet for my '05 9C1, it says the sheetmetal is galvanized. I still found holes I could shove half my hand in under the side skirt while it was in the shop for bodywork. That being said, I picked up a '74 Dodge Ram last year for $100. This is also made of galvanized steel, and looks like it took to the years of salt much better than the Imp. WTF?

I'd assume there's differences in galvanized coatings, as well as sheet metal. You see some rides with 200k on 'em that still look great! Then there's Cavaliers... Laughing .. Although I did drive a newer than mine model (around a '97-'99) that was for sale with just over 200k on it and the body was in much better shape than mine. Maybe it wasn't a MN car all it's life, IDK. They LOVE the salt here in the winters Rolling Eyes I wish I was the one selling 'em road salt!

New cars in general have thinner sheet metal. It's a weight-saving measure.

That's not to say that the quality of steel or galvanizing material hasn't gone down as well.

You can lean on the fenders of an Impala and dent them. Try that with a 70's car (that isn't already rusted to hell).

Your not kidding about the dents. There's a big one on the side of the old Dodge that I tried smacking out with a big rubber mallet. The dent looks like it should pop out close to what it used to be, but getting it there? Seems like a sledgehammer would do it, but I didn't want all the creases that like to happen from metal on metal.

@ jmakinen My 2001 with 118k miles has no signs of severe rust on the body. The underneath on the stock suspension parts yes, but the paint and body look perfect and that was in Long Island Winters for 100k miles of it's life. I guess that's because we've always ran our new york car's through the car washes that did the underbody washes....some little things help I suppose.
