Sounds like a bad cv joint. Look for a cut cv boot. Should be easy to spot if the boot is ripped. Bunch of nasty green grease everywhere on the side that is bad.

Could that possibly be something to do with the transmission?

Not directly with the transmission, its the axel that connects the transmission to the hub/wheel assembly. Not too hard to change. But check first by turning the wheel all the way to one side and look for the green or sometimes black grease as mentioned above. Repeat on the other side. The side that has the grease is the side that is bad.

Mine clunks from a dead stop everytime it rains. Once I am rolling, not a sound. Just yesterday I went underneath her and found nothing I could see wrong. Rained today and nothing but clunk, clunk everytime I start to move. This car has the most challenging suspension I've ever owned.

Midnight, I'd check the CV's.

I'd also check the brake calipers... make sure they're tight and don't move when you wiggle on them. I had a car that had some bushings go bad and that caliper had just enough play in it to make some noise...
