I am interested in some of the suspension and performance differences between the Impala models;
Base
LS
LSS
Indy
SS
Police (9C3 I think)
Are the parts interchangable between the models?

Thanks.

The GMPP strut suspension kit was a "sport" suspension kit, the best ever made for the w-body. It is no longer made, but AGX struts plus Vogtland springs are nearly exactly the same thing. It lowers the car about 1" or so.

There is also the GMPP sway bar kit which includes the biggest sway bars and tubular trailing arms. You should still be able to buy it through dealers, but its cheaper online.

Base FE1 suspension is the soft suspension

LS came with FE2 suspensions which have slightly harder springs and bigger sway bars.

SS came with the FE4 suspension, its slightly lower than base and SS, harder springs, and upgraded sway bars, same sway bars as the GMPP sway bar kit and police vehicles.

9C1 police models came with the 7B3 suspension, it features the same sway bars as the GMPP kit and SS, along with MUCH harder springs. It will also RAISE your car about 2" Shocked I had them on my car, they handle awesome and stop without nose dive, only downside is it looks like a truck. Laughing

Base - 3.4L or 3.8L
LS - 3.8L
LSS - 3.8L
Indy - 3.8L SC
SS - 3.8L SC
Police (9C3 I think) - 3.8L

There's your engines

Base (with 3.8), LS, LSS, 9C1, 9C3 all use the same 3.8L
SS, SS Indy both use the same 3.8L Supercharged

LS and LSS are identical except for a few cosmetic differences
SS and SS Indy are identical except for a few cosmetic differences
9C1 - Police (patrol) is a stripped version of the base with the 3.8 option.
9C3 - Police (detectives/undercover) is a base with the 3.8 plus some HD cooling, steering, electrical

Minus motor specific parts, these cars are 99% interchangeable.

To add to PBSS's info w/ some trans info

The 3.4L in the Base has a 4T65E w/ a 2.86 overall FDR
The 3.8L in the Base & LS has a 4T65E w/ a 3.05 overall FDR
The 3.8L in the 9C1 & 9C3 has a 4T65E w/ a 3.29 overall FDR
The 3.8L SC in the SS/Indy has a 4T65E-HD w/ a 2.93 overall FDR

The trans changed in 03, so you cannot use an 03-05 trans in an 00-02 vehicle and vice versa (without changing the PCM and some other parts)

The 9c1/9c3 have a 125Amp alternator, the rest have a 105A alternator. The 9c1/9c3 alternator can be put on any of the 3.8L motors (not the 3.4L though) with the proper spacer used on the 9c1/9c3

Thanks Habermehl, PBSS, BBE

Thats a lot of great information. Here are some questions I have:

Are the struts better in the 9C1 or just the springs? I am looking for a firmer ride, more sporty and better handling.

Which one has the shorter motor mounts? I read that they are better for throttle response

The 9C1 sway bars are bigger in the front and back or just the front?

I think thats all of the questions I have on that.'

Are there any better parts that can be taken from any other W-body cars, like the throttle body is better on the GP or Monte Carlo and will swap over with very little to no mods.
Thanks all
Albert

the shorter motor mount are from a pontiac montana i think that your talking about, most use them when lowering but ive heard of people putting them on stock cars aswell (dont always do what other do).

9C1 had both front and rear sways and HD trailing arms IIRC.

Thanks BBE for the added info, I was typing it all out when a customer walked in my shop. So I just hit reply and figured I'd come back to finish.

Are the struts the same in the 9C1/3? And are there any other W-body part worth swaping to the Impala?
Thanks
Albert

not W-Body, but you can swap in the F-Body front calipers / brackets.

struts in the 9C1 and 9C3 should be the same.

For handling, go with the GMPP sways, trailing arms and front / rear strut tower brace. You will want a set of brackets for the braces from DonRome. Will make install a breeze.

here is a list of some things worth swaping from other wbodys...

Buick regal: strut tower braces,
Grand Prix GXP front and rear brakes, brake pedal, bilstein shocks, rear boxed trailing arms,
Grand Prix GTP: performance shift shifter (there is a way to get it to work, read about it years ago)
Monte Carlo: steering wheel,
Oldsmobile Intrugue: LED rear view auto dimming mirror with compass

From any wbody: seats, rims, suspension, brakes, more

I meant the struts in my LS, are they the same as the 9C1/3?

The sway bars are the same as the 9C1/3 correct? My LS has the front strut tower brace already, does that come on the LS model? Who is DonRome to get the rear brackets from?

What year Regal? The same 2000 - 2005? Will that car have the rear brace and will it bolt right up or do I need the brackets as mentioned above?

Is there a way to get one of those overhead units that have the miles to empty, fuel milage, compass, ect? If so what year, make, model, and what do I need to make sure I grab from the donor car, like harness, pcm???

Thanks
Albert
