I don't know if the Impalas are the same way with this. But some Monte Carlos have an extra air pump it seems on the rear of the engine. I found it very odd, I have heard it was for CA emissions where this pump just adds oxygen to my exhaust? I'm not 100% on this.

It's pretty annoying to work around, especially after seeing an L36 without one. I'm going to be turboing this car, so I definitely want to take this stupid thing out permanently.

Anyone know what I'm talking about, and the removal of it?

(The weirdest part is why the hell do I have it? I had this Monte Carlo custom ordered in February of 2000 in PA, clearly I don't need a CA pump...)

YEs, it's the secondary air pump for Cali emissions

It basically pumps air into the cat to get it to heat up and work faster

You can remove it, but you will need the non-Cali emissions exhaust manifold and a PCM that isn't expecting it to be there

Neither should be a problem if you eventually add a turbo

So I should wait until my turbo build and get a completely new rear exhaust manifold, since the ZZP Z3 kit uses the stock one with just a cap?

You could swap in the rear exhaust manifold now, but you would need to 'tune' the PCM or find a bin that doesn't have the AIR system in it

Thanks! I think I'll just deal with it during the turbo build then. Bug my tuner guy only once lol.

I'm just glad to know it's easy enough to remove.
