Has anyone used these? http://www.crutchfield.com/p_1.....ckets.html

Turns out I have blown my front door speaker (in addition to my amp crapping itself) and I need to replace them. The last set I got were supposedly direct fits, but I had to trim the baskets on them and I'd like to avoid that if at all possible. I understand there might be some trimming of these brackets, but any input on them would be awesome. Thanks.

I tracked down a set for cheap and decided to see what I was in for. They won't work without some serious trimming of the bracket. I don't know what the speaker mount in the Impala looks like, but I'm quickly growing tired of this BS. Does anyone know if a regular 6.5" speaker will fit without much trouble?

I didn't have any problem mounting my 6.5" Alpines in my stock door mounts.

Do you know if the Monte Carlo and Impala use the same speaker from the factory? I'm fairly certain that I have a different mount than the Impala, but I can't find a good picture of one without the door panel off an Imp.

My initial set of speakers I got for the Monte (which have subsequently blown) were 6.75" speakers and I had to trim the hell out of the speaker basket to get it in the mount. Ideally, I want to buy something that will just screw right into the mount without any fussing.

OK. Disregard. I didn't actually realize the Monte came with a 5" door speaker and a large bracket.

No one seems to know what the hell size speaker is in this car. Crutchfield tells me (both their online service and a phone rep) have told me that I need to use a bracket intended for a Neon to fit a 6.5" speaker or 5.25" speaker in the door, so I purchased on of the brackets to see what was up. After snapping off the tabs for the Neon, I can line up the screw points with the screw holes in the basket of the 6.75" speaker, but there is no way a 6.5" speaker would fit.

Sonic Electronix tells me that I need a 6.75" speaker, so I bought one from them years ago and it didn't fit without some serious surgery. Amazon tells me my car takes a 6.5" speaker... Best Buy had no idea what I was talking about and wouldn't let me take a speaker out of a box to test fit it before I bought it, so I walked out.

ZSPOT, do you know if GM sells the speaker mounts for the Monte Carlo? If they are inexpensive, I may just go buy a set of speakers and hack up the mount to make it work and I need to have a back up plan if I botch it.

This strikes me as something you could get fairly cheap at a scrapyard.

The only problem with that plan is I haven't seen a single 2000 or later Monte Carlo at any of the junkyards around here in the 4 years I've been in Nashville.

Nope. GM sells the bracket with the speaker. So your looking around the $100 mark for the cheapest option of speakers to get the brackets too.

Damn. Thanks for checking that for me. I just ordered some 6.5" speakers that should be here on Friday. Hopefully I don't have to do major surgery on the speaker or the bracket, but I need new speakers... I guess I'll cross my fingers and hope it just fits.

I'll post up what happens for the benefit of any other Monte Carlo owners that might stumble across this in the future.

Thanks for the tip Lingenfelter. One of those places is only an hour from here. Hopefully I don't need to get new brackets, but its great to know there are some in the neighborhood.

Also, for anyone that cares, I have determined that the Monte Carlo has some sort of ridiculous speaker size that no one makes. Here is a picture of what I had to do to make a 6 3/4" speaker fit (which seems to be what most people think I have)

Here is a 6.5" speaker. I don't know if you can see it, but I had to carefully center the speaker in the hole and drill screws in a 45* angle to secure the speaker since it didn't quite fit the hole cut out/screw holes in the stock mount. I could only get 3 of them in on both speakers. It's not perfect, but it will do.

There are a few Montes in the yards around me, if you want the brackets let me know, probably $10-15 each plus shipping.
