Hi all.
Newbie here.
Just picked up my 2005 LS. Looking forward to making it my own.
I have been involved with cars for over 30 years and still enjoy most of it.
I know over the years dex-cool has got a bad name.
I guess it has been improved.
What is the best thing to do? Flush as much as I can out and go with conventional AF. Flush it and put new dex cool in?
Thanks for your thoughts.
Cool

Dexcool isn't the issue. The problem was crappy gaskets.

I believe you are thinking of Dexron 6 (the most recent formulation of the automatic transmission fluid).

Appreciate the replies, but the question remains . . .and as big an issue as this has been and still is, I'm hoping for more answers. Cost is not an issue, I just want to protect my investment.
Thanks. Cool

Your question was answered. Dexcool is not the issue. I've been with GM for 11 years, and every fault that had to do with coolant, was cause by something else. Not the coolant.

I would check the condition of the coolant, and flush it if need be. But I would still recommend putting Dexcool back in. It is a much better product then regular ethylene glycol.

I flush my coolant and put new dexcool in every 2 years. Overkill, yes probably. But it's not that expensive.

I have never had a problem with my cooling system.

ok . . ok . . ok . . don't beat me up. Dexcool is good, gaskets were/are the problem.
So has the gasket quality changed enough for this not be a major issue like in the early days of dexcool?
I am more than willing to flush and fill with new dexcool every two or three years, just part of the maintenance. As long as I know the preferred method so as to protect the Imp.
Good replies, thanks. Cool Cool

If you need to change the gaskets, you can opt for the new upgraded aluminum ones.

I've used Dexcool since new. Flushed and filled every 5 to 3 years with fresh Dexcool and DISTILLED WATER. Using regular tap water can zap the anticorrosive properties of antifreeze, so on that last flush and fill I've always used distilled water after draining all the coolant out of the engine and radiator.

Never had an issue. 140,000 miles.

People that say Dexcool has a problem either don't maintain their cars properly or are just ignorant parrots.
