Car: 2000 Impala, 3.4L, +100K Miles

A couple of months ago, the speed selector for my Heater / Air Cond. lost all of the speed selections from 1 thru 4. I only have the #5 selection, which is high speed. This is a bit inconvenient because it really blasts at that speed. I do get air flow at the lower speeds while I'm driving, but it isn't fan assisted.

Any suggested solutions? Does this sound like a new fan is needed or could it be something in the controls?

It's your blower motor resisitor. You'll eventually lose number 5 as well if you take care of it. The good news is that the part is cheap, the bad news is that it's a pain to replace. It's under the dash, right up against the firewall, near the base of the blower motor. Take down the baffle under the glove compartment and stick your face up in there, you'll see it.

Thanks for the quick response! Looks like I've got some underdash work in my future.

I assume that this is a GM part and not a part that you can get at a parts store?

I'm blocked from Youtube at work, so I can't watch that video right now, so if it has the answer to that question, I apologize.

That video is way better than my pathetic attempt at explaining where it is, you'll be golden once you watch it. Laughing

You'll probably find the GM part at the parts store. I got mine for like 30 bucks from Rockauto when I ordered a bunch of other stuff. I think Dorman might make one for a few bucks cheaper as well.

Successfullly replaced yesterday in 95 degree heat. What a miserable location for that #$#@!!* resistor. I had my head under the dash with my feet up in the air trying to get that bugger out and the new one back in. But it works. Thanks again for the help.

Now the fan has gotten noisy at all speeds. Makes an annyoing growling noise. I guess I'm going to need to replace the fan. It blows air OK, but sounds like its on it's last leg.

What's the blower replacement job like? Easy? Approx. cost of new blower?

You might try cleaning the motor and oiling it with a little 3in1. I did that on a Geo of mine and it still works great.

i know this thread is months old, but instead of starting another thread I thought i'd post up in here. in the 2002 we just picked up, only fan position 1 worked, no biggie ill just rplace the blower motor resistor, did that today like 20 minutes ago. hooked the battery back up to test it, and it still only blows on position number 1. is the motor bad? is the hvac controls shot? help! going to be driving this car next week most likely.....

Turned out to be the dial switch on my HVAC Control panel. Swapped it out with one of my old climate controls and I now have all speeds 1-5!
