Hey guys, I got a computer that has been replaced by another one in the house and i wanted to erase all the info on the computer without having to install the operating system back on it (because i dont have a copy of the operating system). Is there any easy way to do this or can anyone point me in the right direction? The current system on this computer is XP and its a HP

the hp computer should have xp embedded into it, when you startup the computer try looking at the bottom of the screen it will give you a recovery option most likely f10-f12, and you can reinstall. otherwise you will have to go threw control panel add/remove programs and delete everything you want which may take time.

I tried to reformat it with the CD i found for the computer. After i tried to turn it on i realized why we dont use this computer anymore. Nothing comes up on the monitor. From what my buddy said its probably because my Graphics card is fried on my computer. Long story short I pulled the HD and tried running it on my other comp (identical to that one) by itself and it would work. If i ran both HD's then it worked. So i just went in and picked up the HD that was out of the 1st computer and formatted it and now im gonna run 2 HD's in that one computer. I also pulled a stick of Ram from it and am going to put it in the good computer. The rest will go onto CL probably for parts. Any idea's on how much to list the rest of the tower, keyboard, and mouse for on CL? I was thinking $50 but i have not idea.

Great if you want to scrub the whole disc, but he wants to keep the OS.

I would agree that you need to see if the recovery partition is still in working order on this computer. I believe on HP's you have to press F11 as it starts up. You will get an option to "restore to original configuration". This will wipe everything off of the C: partition and reinstall Windows and whatever default programs were on the computer when it was originally delivered.

Determin who makes the hard drive, go to the manufacturers web site for the hard drive and download their free diag utility which will have an erase program...download the iso and burn to a cd. then boot from the cd
some may not have an iso ..some are cross manufacturer...they work on all hard drives.
or google hirens boot cd ..that has deffinately a ton of erase Apps
