This would be the month that I dump my entire slush fund into my fleet. The 2007 needed the attention, the 2003 is becoming a pain.

However, took the 2003 in for oil and tires because I do not have time to address that, and the mechanic pointed out a few things:
1. Water in brake lines. How does that happen? If the water has been there for a long time, wouldnt that rust out my brake lines, resulting in needing new lines soon?

2. Power steering flush? Same thing, water / moisture in the fluid.
3. Tires beginning to dry rot (JUST replaced the SS tires because of rot/worn)

I'm in a position that it's like, do i invest more into the second car or not.
I own it outright, it only costs me a few bucks in insurance monthly. It's nice not to beat up the SS and keep that car as a second, however the SS does better in MPG than the 2003.

Thoughts in how to address the fluids and maybe what to do with the car?
Thanks! Wink

1. Brake fluid is hygroscopic, it attracts moisture from the atmosphere. It should normally be changed/flushed every 2-3 years. The problem is that as it gets old and gathers moisture, your pedal will feel spongier and spongier. I doubt that you lines would rust out anytime soon, but if you're brakes are feeling softer than you remember, its time for a flush. This is usually a fairly cheap service, $50 to $100, and quite worth it for the braking feel and peace of mind.

2. Not sure how water or moisture would be in the P/S system. P/S fluid is rarely changed, but you can change it yourself using a large syringe or turkey baster.

3. Dry rot doesnt mean crap! Unless the rubber is literally flaking off or there are major cracks, its nothing to worry about. All rubber tires will crack a little bit. If you're worried about it, just drive the car a hundred miles a month to give the rubber a "workout" and keep it flexible.

Good luck!

It all depends on how much money you are going to dump into it and how much you are willing to do on your own (to save money). I'd say if you are getting the parts on your own and doing the work in the garage it's silly to get rid of it, however if you need to pay someone to do the work it might be time to get rid of it.

Well, the "repairs"' the mechanic recommended are good preventative maintenance, but NOTHING that must be done now or else your car will blow up. Laughing

If you can read up on changing your own brake fluid, you can do it for $5 in tools plus fluid and another person to pump the brakes for you. P/S fluid is a turkey baster and a bottle or two of new fluid.

With any car, you have to prioritize repairs into things that affect driveability and MUST be done now, things that should be done as time and money allows, and things that are optional but would be nice to do.

I agree, I will admit when I typed the post, I was flipped because of the maintenance on the SS just got me. LOL That car gets the recommended attention required when needed, she's my baby. The Queen song "I'm in love with my car", no joke. Laughing

Can anyone provide a link/video on P/S fluid? Hell, If i can do it myself, I have the tools.

i was just agreeing with what you said. you fix one thing, another one rears its head.

just replaced an epc solenoid, and the increased pressure made a tcc shudder more noticeable. its just one thing after another.

Oh I know man, but the good news is eventually things stop breaking for about 2 weeks. Then it's all over again. LOL

However, I just topped the tank off and averaged 27 mpg. Surprised and happy.
