2000 Impala LS 73000 miles. Just purchased from a friends mom. She had put less than 3000 miles on it in the last 2 yrs. It ran great for a week, I then changed the air filter (pretty cruddy), now when I start it, it chugs and sputters in park like it is getting no gas. All the dash guages go haywire and it stalls out. There is a smell of gas coming from the tailpipe. Same scenario over and over. ? bad IAC, fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel regulator, Any ideas? Any one have a similar problem?

Thanks

Update this afternoon 6/2/11: I checked my battery and it is fine. I cold started it today and a smell of rotten eggs from the exhaust. It started and idled a little over 1RPM, then went to running idle below 1 RPM. I have until Monday before a mechanic will look at it, I was hoping for any further help. When my car was sputtering on start up and then stall it was at running temperature.

Thanks

Update 6/4/11: Today while i cold started it, I tapped on the MAF while it idled and the car surged and went back to idle. I did this a few times and the same thing happened. When my car got to running temp it stalled. I then took the plug off the MAF and it started right up and idled (a little rough) but none the less it was running! I shut it off and put the plug back into the MAF and the car would not start. I took the plug out, it started right up again and idled fine. It threw a code at this point, but I think I found the culprit. I started the car one more time with the plug out and then put the plug in while it was running and it stalled out. I am gonna buy some cleaner and clean it first to make sure that 's it and then put a new MAF in.

Update 6/5/11: It took me 20 minutes to clean the duct system and all the parts that would flow through the MAF. The MAF that I cleaned worked fine the rest of the day, CHWEW ! I figured since that I had bought the new one I was just going to replace it anyway. Car is fine, I am fine, All stars aligned.

If the car sat for two years and the cluster is going nuts, I'd probably start with the battery. Have it tested to make sure it's in good shape.

Like I suggested in your pm, rotten eggs smell is usually associated with coolant burning, right guys? But I would have the mechanic take a look at it, b/c there is so many little things that could be wrong, especially when it comes to electrical. A bad ground would most certainly cause problems, but that is only one of very few possible problems. Have the mechanic inspect the IAC, FPR, fuel filter, major wiring and grounding, intake and head gaskets. And also the MAF. Hopefully its not something problematic with one of the computers, ecu, bcm, pcm, etc.

I had something like that happen. Ended up being a loose wire on the IAC.

rotten eggs is usually a bad cat, no? When I was leaking and burning coolant it smelled like nothing more than burnt dexcool (which smells like some other breakfast item lol). Idk what non GM stuff smells like, though.

OP: If you don't know what dex smells like sniff the reservoir (WHEN the car is COLD).
