Simple. Your car isn't moving, less air is hitting your radiator thus it can't cool quite as well. I have a warm air intake, it fluctuates a lot. When my lim went bad if I stopped my car would overheat... so i ran stop signs (no faster than 5mph and only in the county).

You can duplicate this by taking your fan off of your computers heatsink, or rather to see the opposite, by adding another one (if possible).

another fix would be to replace the t-stat with a 180 degree or lower. the fans are programmed to come on at 220 degrees if I remember correctly.

Or just run a 195 degree. It runs fine with that. If it's still overheating then something is wrong elsewhere.

It's been crazy hot here the last week, 98-100 the past 3 days, not really showing a sign of cooling down. When driving around, air conditioning on. my car will still get a least a full line above the half way mark. I don't think it should be getting that high. Do they have a 190 or 185 * thermostat? I have whatever the OEM is since we did the LIM/UIM gaskets 15k miles ago.

I think you have too get it tuned for a cooler tstat.. It's gotten up to around 95 here. With the AC on my temp gauge sits a notch below halfway mark.

You don't have to, but a cooler t-state doesn't really do much without the cooling fan turn on temps changed as well.

Yeah that's what I was getting at. Pretty much makes little difference without it.

However, with a properly maintained cooling system with all the stock baffles in place,.. even when driving in the city, as long as I'm moving, my car stays right at the 180 mark. It's only when I sit still that the temps climb. And anything to help keep my transmission cooler, the better. Well worth the $12 for a thermostat and a chance to get my hands a little dirty.
