Well the time to make a decision finally came for me today. Tranny started slipping badly, every 10 mins of driving it has trouble going into the next gear and long story short i got two choices.

1. Sell it as is for 3000 bucks and basically lose 1000 in mods and giving the car for free (got it for 2500 put around 4k in it)

2. Put it in the garage and tear out the engine and transmission and shove an ls4 in there.

Lucky for me my father didnt want to waste that much money so he agreed to #2 Very Happy, this is still a long ways away but hopefully in time ill end up with something not many people have.

One question i have however is what kind of transmission would go well with an engine such as the LS4, i have been hearing a lot of bad things about the stock ones and i have never hated a transmission more than the one in my impala right now. (my dad used to have a Dacia 1300 - google it - even that had a better tranny)

Im sure if you beefed up the 4t65e thats in it like TEP does it might actually hold the 300 horse of the LS4. I would love to see this come along let me know I would love to help. You should get the whole car not just the engine cause from what i read on gts's thread he needed everything.

Your only real choices are : 4t65e, 4t65e or 4t65e...

Not many options for a tranny to mate to the LS4 as they were design to specifically mate to the 4T65E-HD. You may be able to mate it to one of the other FWD trannies, but they aren't really much better and will take alot to get the TCM to work

Not sure you realize, but you have to swap a ton of stuff to get the LS4 in there... including the dash and much (if not most) of the electronics from an 06+ Impala

Do yourself a favor and either have a 4T65E built and drop it in with your current engine or swap in a complete L67 w/ a built 4T65E

BBEngineer

EDIT: There is a pretty good thread on MCF from a guy who swapped the LS4 into his 6th Gen Monte (same as your Impala) and there are some actual details there

Thanks for that MC link BBE thats going to be helpful im also looking at the member with the white impala that put an ls4 in it i forgot his name but he did post the story of it here somwere and im sure there will be plenty of tears involved here but since the car is gona be garage bound for at least 1-2 years there is no rush, especially with 2 years of college left and all of the money im makin im essentially putting in a beer bong that ends in my impala.

His thread isn't very useful and he had no idea what the hell he (and by he, I mean his mechanic) did. The Monte Carlo thread at least has some details and answers BBEngineer's questions, which IMO renders ImpalaGTSs thread nothing more than a proof of concept.

Change of plans... sorry to dissapoint anyone lol but i just got a quote for the trans and it will b around 700 so ill just have it fixed and ill put it up for sale for around 4500, the reason for this is a friend of my dads just told him he has a 96 ss with 80k on it and he will give it to us for 10,000. plus the 10 grand estimate for the ls4 conversion didnt help either hahah but we wil see wha happens the l67 isant out of the question yet either.

Looks like its going to be the L67 after all, getting the transmission completely redone, new torque converter, the works gonna run me around 1900 in total, it would have been 2500 but lucky for me i can get a shop discount. I figured if i do this then might as well just keep workin on her for a while, when budget permits ill track down a L67 and we will see how it goes from there, ill keep you guys posted.
