Hi I have a 02 Impala LS 3.8 with 150,000 miles on it. I have noticed recently that the non-ribbed side of the belt has a rust layer on it as well as all of the pulleys. Has anyone ever seen this before or have any idea where it may be coming from? Alternator is original as well as all there other pulleys.

I am planning on taking about a 1600 mile round trip and want to make sure everything is in working order.
thanks
Nick

Has the car been sitting for a while? Some of the pulleys may rust when not used. Also check for coolant leaks, it can look rusty-ish if its gets sprayed around.

Can you post a picture?

Are you sure it's rust and not nasty Dexcool leaking somewhere near the belt?
