Hey guys! I'm going to clean my EGR valve and I know and see where to detach it via the two bolts where it sits on top of the gasket, and the bolt that attaches it to the pipe.

My question is, how do you remove the computer/wire connectors without breaking it? It looks like they just pull out, but I can't be sure without potentially damaging the unit. I've searched Youtube and Google, and everything says "disconnect" without saying how? Bolts are easy. Wires, well, sure I can yank them, but, what would YOU do, lol!

Thanks, and again, greetings!

Press the black latch in the middle of the gray connector at the top of the EGR, then pull it off.

How often should we clean the EGR Valve? Only if we are having problems with it? The EGR on my 01 3.8 has never been touched in the 115k miles..

Right about never. I replaced mine when I got a EGR code, but it wound up being a clogged cat. Rolling Eyes $90 down the drain lol.

Unless you get a EGR code, I really wouldnt touch it. It does build up carbon inside, but generally not enough to worry or do anything about.

MISHNAH, what procedure did you do to clean your EGR valve before? I've never clean mine with 110,000 miles on it.

I replaced mine, didnt clean it. You can remove it and use some carb cleaner and a brush to clean the air passages. But like I said, you dont really need to clean it.

You will need to buy a new gasket if you remove it, a few bucks at your local parts store.

Thanks Mishnah! And yes, I did get a code. Forgot the number, but basically it was the one for improper emissions, and I'm in NY State, so I need the check engine light to go away to pass inspection. I hope it just needs a cleaning, if not, replacing it isn't too bad, just $75-9 bucks for the part where I am (includes gasket, though I already bought one). I hope its just the valve.

Thanks again!
