Exhaust, cold air intake,...opinions/recommendations please. Ballpark figures regarding each would be nice,as well.

Bear with me,I'm an Impala newbie.

Thanx

intake, make your own about $50-$60 or off the shelf kit for around $200

exhaust, a few options, from $200 to over $1K

Can you elaborate on the "make your own" option...mechanical aptitude should not be an issue for me. Rolling Eyes

on the subject of exhaust i would like to further his question... A LOT of past forums are outdated info, i did find a couple exhaust systems

http://www.lmperformance.com/7063/.html

and

http://www.lmperformance.com/5845/.html

the slp is cheaper than the borla but not by a whole lot.. what differences can anyone point out?
also, i plan on putting a body kit on, should i put the rear lip on before installing the exhaust. i want the tips to be visible once the ground effects are installed.

The best performance mod for the Impala is a bill of sale.

Save the money for the inevitable mechanical failures you will be experiencing in the near future.

I love my car, but I'm not going to be a W-body leg humper... These cars have a lot of problems and they will all eventually get you. In the last 2 years or so I've had to replace damn near everything on the car (LIM gaskets, UIM, power steering line, trans cooler lines, wheel hubs, blower motor resistor, MAF sensor, IAC, BCM, transmission, etc). I just spent 2400 bucks on a rebuilt transmission and now I need to deal with a fuel level sender switch that is throwing a code.

The sad truth is that these cars have serious issues and money would be better utilized in a savings account to replace crap when it breaks.

it's really sad but i hear ya. i want to do so much to my car because i love it so much but its close to 10 years and im not mechanically inclined.. the only good thing is the majority of my 75k miles is most are highway, which should count for something. i bought this when it only had 13k on it

I wouldn't worry about them criticizing the w body's on here. Both me and my brother got them as first cars. He has never had an issue other than replacing the cat. My first impala base model never had any issues with over 100k and my current has never had an issue besides a blend door issue with the ac other than problems I caused while putting new parts on it. Got two buddies with s/c grand prix's, hardly a problem.

Idk how these guys drive, or if they do their maintenance, but if you take care of the car your not going to have a laundry list of problems like some of the users with bad exp might imply.

That's 5 cars with few problems compared to the THOUSANDS of W-Bodys with major issues... consider you and your friends lucky (and the exception)

And it has nothing to do with maintenance...

Maintenance had nothing to do with my UIM melting, my LIM gasket failing, my BCM failing, my multifunction switch failing, my PCS valve in the transmission failing, transmission cooler and power steering lines rupturing, my cat failing, the fuel level sensor failing, blower motor resister failing, wheel hubs failing, etc etc. (note the common thread here... these are all parts that shouldn't fail)

Hell, the two guys that worked on my car when my trans and fuel level sensor bombed out on me explicitly mentioned how well my car has been maintained and cared for after a decade on the road. Sure didn't prevent the failings of the W-body from catching up to me.
