2005 Chevrolet Impala

PostPosted: Wed May 18, 2011 3:37 am    Post subject:  Clarification Please? :) Reply with quote

Ok So I have a 2005 Impala LS 3.4L, Spoiler, Alloy Rims, Bucket Seats, & Cloth Interior. Im in need of a camera, But i tend on sticking around long enough cause my plans are big. Now how Do i know if my Impala is an L36 or L56 (if im correct) because i havent been able to tell them apart or what they have in similarity for that matter.

When i purchased my Impala The Previous owner Gave me To Clusters. Reason being the one he had before the new one wasnt reading the MPH so he went to the junkyard and got a cluster that "claims" The car has 256k Miles, When in fact it has 116k.

Supposedly the Previous owner stated that if i were to connect the old cluster in i would be able to see how many actual miles the impala has (116K). i havent really gotten around to checking the truth cause i dont know how to take apart the Dash lol

But thanks alot for the help. Great to be part of an amazing Pala Community

If it is a 3.4L then it is an LA1. L36 is the series II 3.8 and L67 is the supercharged 3.8 in the SS impala. The dash is easy to take apart. Take the fuse panel covers on both sides of the dash off, then unclip the black plastic pieces below the dash, above your feet. Remove the screws to the peice on the bottom of the dash, drivers side. I can't remember how many screws, but it's like two on the bottom and two on the side. Then you're ready to take the entire face of the dash off. Again I can't remember exactly how many screws, but it's something like two on the side of the dash, drivers side, two above the cluster, and a couple below the dash peice too I think. Then you just slowly pop the dash off, starting from one side to the other. To take it off you'll find you have to unclip the Hazard and Traction control buttons and also put the gear lever in 1st if you have a column shift. That may sound confusing, but just get in there and do it and it makes since. After the first time taking the dash apart, it's fairly easy to do.

Just an FYI... if you have the 3.4L, you don't have an LS.. the LS was only available w/ the 3.8L

It's easy to tell them apart... open the hood and look at the top of the motor. The 3400 has an aluminum upper intake and no cover. The 3800 has an engine cover (if it's still there) and a plastic upper intake

ROFL That's pretty good. Only bad part is, is how many miles were put on the car after the 116k mark? You'll never know.

For a quick verification, look at the 5th digit of your VIN.
    F = base model
    H = LS model

So either it was an LS and someone swapped in the smaller motor, or more likely, someone slapped an LS badge on it

Like ZSPOT said, check the VIN number

In Total i paid 3000 Firm For the car. from my knowledge it has been in a previous accident. but from the way they fixed it. it doesnt look to major at all. Now, as to me knowing how many miles the car has traveled since i bought it from 116K miles. i have no idea. i just know that my Title or registeration (if im correct) says 116k miles and my dash says 257,456 Smile

I will check the letter of my vin. and let you guys know.....

Maybe I worded that wrong.

You are basing your facts off of the individual you bought it from. The cluster was removed at 116k miles. How many miles did he drive the car with the cluster that has 250k on it? Your taking the word of someone trying to get rid of their car. I would tell the buyer it only has 116k too. Wink

If you want, you can PM me your VIN and I can run a build sheet on it.

LS: 3.8 engine, spoiler, fog lights, front ls bumper, heated seats, leather seats, center console, traction, ls cluster etc.

Base: bucket seats, steering wheel lever, no fog lights, no spoiler, base bumper, base cluster etc.

Main difference is engine. If the search feature still worked its be alot easier.

Correct the engine is the main difference, but most of the options can go either way. Like you can get the 3.8 in a base, but not the 3.4 in an LS. Bucket seats can be in a base also. Either one can have leather or cloth, the buckets or bench determines if the shifter is on the column or floor. Heated seats, traction control, sunroof, etc are all options and not standard. Acutally maybe traction control is on the LS idk Laughing

I guess they did just slap on the LS Badge To make it look like an LS. I think its base guys

SFI = Sequential Fuel Injection
