I think this is the right section..... So my message center says service vehicle soon. I read the handbook and I shall go to the mechanics on Tuesday but I was just wondering if there was a specific thing that throws this light(bcm, PCM, etc.) it says in the hand book that it's engine related or could have something to with trunk release sensor? Any input would be cool. Thanks in advance. Oh it will only come on after a bit of driving and when the car is hot and it doesn't stay on just flicks on the off on off on off you get the picture.

Manufacturer specific diagnostics codes can trigger SVS/SES rather than CEL/MIL. The MIL is reserved for a standard set of P-series OBD-II codes. You can call OnStar if you have it and they'll tell you the nature of the fault and schedule an appointment. There are thousands of codes. If by "flicks on and off" you mean the MIL lamp is flashing, that indicates misfire. It is a good idea to get yourself an OBD-II scanner so you can read codes. I recommend this one, or if you have an Android phone there's an app for that. Notice that I said "read codes," not "clear codes." I advocate keeping yourself informed but still having your vehicle serviced by a professional whenever service is necessary. Too many people have a "just turn off the light" mentality and it hampers the diagnostic process to clear codes unnecessarily.

Are you sure the Actron CP9135 can read manufacturer specific PCM and BCM codes? I don't think it does

I'm sorry not to have gotten back to you sooner, I've been tied up with business the past few days.

To answer the question about the CP9135, yes it will read OBDII PCM codes, and no it will not read BCM or ABS codes. Actron does have a new model out that will read OBDII and ABS codes but as far as I know, nothing except GM's Tech2 scanner will read the BCM codes.

If you're still interested in the Actron scanner I'll check shipping costs to Canada for you, but if you need to read BCM codes it's not gonna help you.

Now that I think of it, the "Service Vehicle Soon" warning is usually a BCM issue, is it not? So maybe this isn' the answer. Sorry....

Ok, but like I said, this will NOT read BCM codes, no way no how.

In a case where you need to read a BCM code you're almost better off finding a shop that has the right scanner and having them read it. Yeah it will cost you a few bucks but its cheaper than the $1000+ for a Tech 2.

But does it read the extended manufacturer PCM codes (P1xxx)?

There are others... SnapOn has one, HPTuners newer versions read BCM codes

Not all, but most of the SVS warnings are BCM problems

They are pricey

GM TechII: ~$3000
Snap-On: ~$2000
HPTuners: ~$500

There may be others, but those are the one I know read the BCM
