PostPosted: Fri Mar 11, 2011 1:49 pm    Post subject:  Oil Change notification Reply with quote

I received my dad's 02 impala for graduation last year, and have driven it since then. Around October I was asked him about if I should do an oil change, and he told me to wait until the car put up an oil change notification on the dash, because it counts by engine cycles and that I wouldn't want to do it before then because then it wouldn't be counting right, or something like that.

But I still haven't had that notification, and I have put probably 9000 miles on the car since then... I really want to do an oil change, but should I just go ahead and do it?

I had the battery die twice, once over summer and once around thanksgiving which I then replaced the battery. Would the battery dying have anything to do with the notification?

Edit: my car now has 169k, it was in the range of 159k-162k when I started driving it. and no idea how far he even drove it before that...

Change the oil, reset the oil life monitor.

Do that whenever you like. Doesn't hurt a thing. I hardly EVER saw the oil change light on my Monte in 11 years.

And on the flip side... I never changed the oil until I got the oil change notification (sometimes 8k miles, sometimes 12k miles)

There is no need to do a 3k mile oil change on most modern cars with modern oil

Agreed. Don't believe the monitor. It's a lying sack of crap. Laughing

I just changed my oil yesterday and the light still on. I'll have reset it through the radio? It's been a while. At 9000 miles, I would change it.

I can also agree with this. I'll usually go 5-6,000 miles or six months before changing the oil.

I would put some "gunk" in the oil before changing it and get all that crap out.

I change mine when I go up to my parents and the weekend is nice and I know it's been a little while.

Sometimes I haven't driven much and it's a 2k mile 5 month thing, or sometimes I drove a lot and it's an 8k mile thing.

I try to do it every 3-4 months though. My last one was in November, PITA to change the oil when the garage floor is all dirty and cold haha.

I change mine about every 4K miles. Only time the light ever comes up is when I forget to reset it. And I'm pretty sure the battery dying will reset it, but not positive. And btw, to reset it, turn the ignition to on and push the gas pedal all the way down 3 times in 5 seconds.

GM is pretty confident in the oil life monitor system. However, in the fine print they still state that the oil should be changed once every 12 months.

I change my oil every month or twice a month depending on how much i drive. Better safe than sorry is what i say especially when it comes tho the 3800's. But in all every 2500 - 3000 miles.
