2003 Chevrolet Impala

PostPosted: Wed Feb 09, 2011 2:23 pm    Post subject:  Partial Dashboard lights at night Reply with quote

Hi,

New to this forum as I just picked up a 2003 Impala LS 3.8.

I am having an issue with the left side of the dashboard lights not coming on. The speedometer side is fine. Only very rarely you will hear a click and the non working left side will come on.

I would have assumed it was just a burned bulb but as it works rarely I assume it is either the ambient light sensor, dimmer switch or BCM.

The dimmer switch does dim/brighten the lights as well.

I have no idea which or any of these it is ,

any info is appreciated
thanks.

If some of the lights in the cluster are coming on, then it is likely just burned out bulbs...

if none of the bulbs in the cluster come on, they could all be burned out, or it could be a bad fuse or a bad dimmer switch

I thought it may be burned bulbs but rarely they do work say once a month

That's normal for bulbs that are bad... the filament vibrates and gets temporarily rewelded to the post causing it to work for a short time

Interesting

Very hard to access these lights to replace them?

Or do you have to replace the entire instrument cluster

You have to disassemble the cluster unsolder the old bulbs, then resolder new ones

I offer a repair service to replace the factory bulbs or upgrade to LEDs if you don't want to do it yourself

I'd tackle it myself as I usually do but I did alot of reading on this online and found that you had to remove the needles from the speedo, tac etc and people could not remove them without destroying the cluster.

Any insight on this

You can damage the cluster if you are not careful...

If you are going to tackle it yourself, you can look here:

Yes, the bulbs are considered non-serviceable by GM, so they would replace the cluster

I buy them in bulk from Asia... I think Radio Shack carries a bulb that will work, but I don't have the part number off hand
