New guy here, looking for a Impala 2003-2005

What is better 3.4 or 3.8?
Which year is more dependable?
I have 5k to spend, can I get a low mileage 2005 that is very clean for that?
Anything else I should look for?
The stealers think 2005 Impala's are worth 7k or more, I think there crazy!!

If you plan to mod the motor, then 3.8 is the way to go. Aftermarket is much larger for the 3800.

All years are pretty much the same, some electronic differences in mid 04-05, nothing the average person will notice.

LIM (Lower Intake Gasket) gasket failure is common in these cars, so is the ISS (Intermediate Steering Shaft) issue. ISS is an easy fix, you can lube yours or replace it. Both options are discussed here a lot.

$7K for an 05 isnt crazy if the miles are low and the car is in great shape.

got my 3.4L base with 40k miles for 7000k. Was a steal! wouldnt change my purchase at all. My interior looked like new and exterior only had a few dings and scratches on my bumpers.

if you look around you will find a decent one.

If you aren't trying to buy straight out, you can get an SS with decent mileage for about 8k. With 4k down, you would be in good shape. Just a thought.

if he's looking for standard transportation, then why bother with an SS?

Pitch, because EVERYONE (almost) begins looking for basic transportation. And then the mod bug hits 'em, whether by choice or because the tranny/engine/*insert random part* fails. So why not just skip the middle steps and get right to the get down!

EDIT: I got my fully optioned out LS - minus the sunroof - for a whopping $800!!! I'm just saying... Razz

That's why my first comment asked his intentions. I've been there, traded my 02LS for the 04SS. He has $5K to spend, an SS in that range will have a ton of mileage.

Yeah, that's why I was saying if he's not pressed about buying it out right, he can get one with decent mileage for about 8k. 4k down on an 8k car should yield a decent monthly payment. That's the route I would go. That, or get an LS with 90k miles for 3.5k and use the other 1.5k to mod it to an SS.
