My 01 LS has developed some odd play in the steering at low speeds/complete stop n' go driving. It almost feel like a component directly related to steering it's self is loose. I wouldn't say it's an audible clunk but definitely something you can feel.

Any thoughts? Car has 44k miles

well if it is anything like what im experiencing.... (and it sounds like it is) your rack and pinion could need replaced... mine is leaking and giving the same symptoms an ISS would. its pricey and i was quoted 700 locally parts and labor. it could also be your ISS... which is cheaper....i think... dunno whats involved

Try spraying lube (lithium spray) down the steering shaft inside the cab. Under the dash pull down the rubber waffle boot as far as you can, see a knuckle you want to try and get spray squirting down past beyond that knuckle into the shaft cavity. Go for it wont hurt anything. Cured my problem in the past, felt and sounded way better.

Research more under Lube ISS shaft

I have been putting up with my ISS Clunk for a couple of months..finally went to local parts store and bought a can of white lube. Opened up the shaft boot and sprayed the shaft....amazingly enough clunk/noise all gone. I totally expect it to return as the spray greas was not very thick but hey if I have to do that every couple of months or so its way cheaper than a replacement shaft or labor to properly grease it.
GM should recall these dam things anyway.

How much did you use? I could only get about an 1/8 of a can in there before it started overflowing.

I could of used the whole can as it runs out the bottom onto the road. But I believe I used only 1/4 can. Likely will have to do it again soon as I mentioned the canned grease is not very thick and will wear out shortly.

Well I put some more lithium grease is the shaft and went for a ride. Much better! Almost feel like a non power steering car. Super easy to manuver. I'm going too have to get used to it on the highway.
