I searched, but couldn't find any info on this. The air conditioning is totally dead on my 2000 LS. The pump is making an awful noise, I'm guessing the bearings are shot in it somehow. I never use the AC in my car so it's basically useless weight. I found an AC delete pulley from ZZP that I will replace the pump with, but for weight savings and to clean up the look of the engine compartment, what else besides the pump and condenser can I remove?

The hoses, liquid line and drier probably outweigh the condenser...Good luck with the resale value... Exclamation ...Ben

Not to mention that your defroster won't work worth a darn.

It's a 2000 Impala... 10 years old at this point... I have more resale value in the gum I'm chewing at the moment. (No offense to the OP)

Not looking to resale the car anytime soon. I bought this car with the intent to keep it for a very long time and still have that intent. I don't drive it in the winter, and I haven't had to use the AC all summer. I'm pretty set on removing the AC, I'm just asking for on info on how to remove the most amount of weight by doing this.

edit: The AC hasn't been working so neither has the defog, so I guess I haven't had to use that either.

That's a point in your favor as the defroster is almost useless without the dehumidifying effect of the A/C... Idea ...Ben

Not to question your knowledge, but in the owner's manual it says that in the defog and defrost settings, "The air conditioning compressor will run automatically in this setting unless the outside temperature is below 40*F."

Correct...If your winters are typically colder then you may not notice any change...Below forty degrees humidity is low and dehumidification is not an issue...Here in God's country, things are different... Razz ...Ben

Oh I see you're from Texas.. Yeah, I live in the Adirondacks up in NY so our winters consist of 8 months of below zero weather. It's not so fun. Also, I can see AC being necessary somewhere warmer but there's not really alot of waiting in traffic here so with the windows down there is enough cooling for me to be comfortable.

Any info on removing these items?

Just remove everything related to the AC. Follow the lines, disconnect them as close to the firewall as possible. If you want to remove the evaporator you'll need to rip apart the dash.

The only problem I can think of is when you remove the condenser you'll need to make some spacers or something to go in it's place. The radiator presses against the condenser to hold it in, without the condenser there your radiator will flop around.

I have a thicker radiator from a GTP so it's slightly different. It pushes the fans pretty close to the exhaust manifold so maybe I can get some more room for those by taking the condenser out. I forget how it all goes together so I'm not sure about that. But thanks for the info, I think I'm gonna go through with this.

What he said...It's just a straight-forward removal involving common wrenches...After you get your condenser out, you may also be surprised at how much leaves and bugs you'll remove...Your cooling system will thank you for that... Rolling Eyes ...Ben

Just an FYI, according to the service manual if you disconnect the AC Compressor, you will get a Check Engine Light or a Service Engine Soon (on the second startup of the car)
