What is the body panel that surrounds the grille and goes under the headlights but above the actual bumper called? Is it part of the bumper or separate?

The reason I ask is tonight while driving down a country road (4 lane divided, but still no interstate) a pack of four of five dogs decided it would be a good idea to run across the road while i come barreling at them doing 65mph. I managed to swerve into the other lane and only ended up running over one, but in the process it took out my drivers side fog light and put a huge crack in said piece.

What a crappy night, not only do I trash the front-end of the Impala, only probably not enough to hit my deductible. But I also have the guilt of killing a dog. I could care less about a raccoon or squirrel or something but a dog is a whole different ballpark.

PSA: Hey rednecks, keep your dogs secure if you live next to a 4 lane 65mph road.
Sorry for the rant.

that's part of the bumper cover, and it's one piece from the grill surround to the bottom of the bumper and wheel to wheel. The gray molding is a separate piece that clips into the cover.

Yeah that's what I was worried would be the case. Now that look at it harder the whole thing is bent forwards some so I'm thinking replacement is more than necessary.

I searched online and it looks like new OEMs can be had in the $200 range, do you think it would be easy and cheaper to look at salvage yards?

Also, since the grey trim is not damaged would I be able to salvage that from my bumper cover and install it on a new one?

You'll need to inspect the low speed impact absorber, the crash bar, and crush mounts as well. The absorber is a plastic block between the cover and the actual steel bumper/crash bar, which is all attached to the frame by crushable mounts.

If anything else in there is damaged, it should be replaced for insurance purposes.

LMAO.

Well it looks like I'll definitely just be replacing it. A couple more questions: Assuming I bought a replacement bumper cover that was already primed, about how much would it cost to get it painted? How difficult is it to remove and install a bumper cover, and are there any good guides to doing so (searched, couldn't find much)? Can the black trim be removed from a bumper without damaging it?

Thanks for any help, I'm trying to figure out my best course of action, I'd much rather do as much as I can myself than drop a ton at a body shop.

Does anyone have an answer about removing the trim from the old bumper cover for use in the new one? Has anyone ever removed the trim without damaging it?

Any help would be appreciated, I can buy a new trim piece for $40, but the old one is in perfect condition so I'd rather use it if at all possible.

I recall someone carefully removing it from the car to paint it. You might have to worry about breaking off the mounting clips though.

Then they will definitely not like my suggestion.

I think worse would have been dealing with the mess WhiteLightning04MC had to deal with...
