Hey guys i have a 2005 impala that i recently bought and i just found out that it has a rear main engine oil leak (small leak) and that is very expensive to fix and the previous owner has told me that he tried fixing the leak with a sealer but it did not work. I would like to know if anybody has a alternative solution and do you think that i should try oil additives or a sealer again if so any good sealers out-there?

Rear main engine oil leak? Do you mean the LIM gasket? If so, it needs to be replaced.

There are no 'gasket in a can' fixes that actually work.

If it's the LIM, you are courting disaster (overheating, water in the oil -> bearing failure, etc) by not fixing it.

If it's another oil seal like the main crank seal and you're merely dripping oil onto the road, you've got to keep an eye on the oil level, but it's not as urgent.

Anything you pour in the crankcase to fix a gasket may clog your oil pathways, and isn't going to fix the problem anyway.

Sorry, there's no substitute for mechanically fixing the issue.

okay i just double checked with the previous owner and he told me that it is not the lim gasket that is leaking so i guess the car is just dripping oil due to the leak.

How much oil are you losing?

If it's your LIM, I'm with pdb in that you need to get that taken care of ASAP.

If it's actually your rear main seal, there's really no way to get to that [that I know of] without removing the engine. However, in my last vehicle, I had a rear main leak and after switching to Valvoline Max Life, it did seem to help the leak out quite a bit. Did not cure it, but it did help to the point to where I did not have to add oil between oil changes...[/u]
