I need a tune on my car (04 SS) and was debating on getting an Overkill PCM or having a local tuner do it for me. The local guy is a friend of mine and uses the HPTuner program. He charges $250 and has done alot of high HP cars local and seems to really know what he is doing. On the other hand I have read some very good things about Overkill.

Thoughts? Thanks

Provided the tuner knows what he is doing, an in car tune will trump an off the shelf tune any day. It is specific to your car and will maximize your cars potential better than a mail order tune.

Not to mention there have been a lot of complaints about overkill lately. People have been waiting months to get their pcm's

Back from the dead.

I ended up getting the custom tune, but am not super happy with it. The tuner used HPTuner. I was wondering if I get an Overkill PCM can he still use HPTuner to check things or adjust final drive settings if I get a new tranny? I ask cause Im sure HPTuner uses the VIN of the car to unlock it right? Well the new Overkill ECU should have the correct VIN on my car, so Im thinking HPTuner should still work.

Just wondering, Im about 99.9% sure on the Overkill PCM. My tuner just doesnt have alot of experience on the 3800. If it was a LSx it would be no problem for him. At WOT he only has 9* of timing. I just feel he is leaving alot on the table.

Im running 3.4, Wires, 104 plugs, 180*, 3" catless DP, and wizaired. Soon adding Plog, coated crossover, and ported rear manifold.

Overkill PCM's are locked and cant be tuned by anyone but them. Reason is, he uses his own tuning software and equipment to tune them. Any other software wont be compatible with it.

Ok I was wondering about that. I'm sure I can ship the ecu back to him for changes tho right? I plan on doing a TEP trans this winter with a 3.29 gear set.

Must be something he changed. I remember someone asking why it was locked and that was his reply.

That would be sweet if I could still have access to the tune via HPTuner. I will research this alittle more.

Thanks guys
