OK, this is me doing my early research. I am getting ready to "pull the trigger" and order a ZZP DownPipe w/ High Flow Cat for my '04 Monte Carlo. As I understand, this will more then likely cause the car to throw a PO420 service code.

The solution I've seen is to have someone with a tuner erase that code from the car's computer (otherwise it will pop up frequently.

My question to the folks here, is there anyone near Cleveland Ohio (I actually live in Mentor Ohio) that would be willing to help me out with this situation?

I'm looking to line someone up for after I install this mod OR perhaps just erase the code before I even order the mod.

Thanks everyone!

You could give Intense over in Columbus a holla. John or Chris could delete it for you.

There's a few other guys in Ohio on 3800pro.com that have HPTuners also I believe.

I'm really hoping for something a little closer to home if I can find it.

I live in cortland ohio, which is about 45 min to an hour and half depending on what part of cleveland from you. On the map its pretty much east near the PA border, just look for a lake on the map called misquetto lake. I have the HPT and could take the code out for you, the only thing is im out of credits, and you would have to pay to get enough to do your car. I also go up to cleveland from time to time.

as far as credits IIRC it's 2 credits for one car so that's like $100 bucks aka $50/credit

Just buy a spark plug anti fouler at the auto parts store, then modify and install it using the procedure in the link below.

When we were at the Cincy meet, jw was able to delete mine from my PCM. No light since Very Happy

EDIT: After viewing your garage, I approve of your Monte Carlo Cool

All I have over here in Geneva is an Autozone $80 code reader; I don't know if that's what you're looking for. Confused

OH, good grief. I just looked at the HP Tuner page for info about it. I *never* knew it required credits (and they have quite the system from 1 vehicle license to unlimited). Granted, I suppose it does make a lot of sense from a business model (what I mean is if the device was sold and could work on all cars years x-y then people would buy the device once and the manufacturer would not have any income to continue supporting more vehicles).

Thanks Frank! I think based on my questions on this forum, I am also looking to make it better (I currently have a plan, this silly engine code is the last piece before I begin executing my plan).

EricJ - Sadly you are right, the device you have won't do what I'm looking for. Heck, I was hoping a GM Tech II would (as I know a couple of people with access to those, bus sadly, no).

DonRome - That is a neat idea.... But I think I'm going to stick to this route so far (makes for a cleaner appearance and removes the risk of getting other codes as a result).

fastrunner08 - So far, I think I may have to agree with WingMan. If the credits will cost $100, I think I'm not that much further from just buying a more tuned PCM and making a swap. Like I said, I did not know these tuners had more to it then simply buying the device.

I'm pretty sure you can't disable the code with a Tech II, you need a tuner like HPT. I know many guys that have used the anti fouler with good results. It's a cheap fix so it's worth a shot, if it doesn't work then you can look into disabling it with a tuner.

Gotta be careful with the spark plug anti fouler trick though. I think xnick or EMMJAY maimed himself trying to bore out the anti fouler.

Honestly, if that is all you would wanted tuned, then i would go with the non fouler trick too, I had that mod for a long time before i bought the hpt. If you wanted something else tuned as well, then you might consider the credits, cause we could always change the tune, or make it better depending on the mods you add. Personally, and i don't know if people agree with this or not, but the reason i got the hpt to begin with is because i don't trust off the shelf tunes at all. Not to put zzp down, but i have heard from alot of people that they just simply delete all the trans warning codes, and the tune that they give really wears the transmission down fast. Along with some other things. So if you go that route be weary!! but the non-fouler if thats all you want tuned seems like your best bet!

I've been doing a lot of reading lately about that anti-fouler tip. Seems a lot of people have been using that for this check engine light issue with headers and high-flow cats.

Stands to reason, I can do my ZZP downpipe w/ high flow cat, if I get this code like many others do, I can try this anti-fouler mod (easy and cheap enough). Then if I get to a point of having enough mods and the itch to get the car completely re-tuned, then I can (and remove that code at that time and remove the anti-fouler mod as well).

Thanks everyone, this has been really helpful information.
