2002 Chevrolet Impala

PostPosted: Wed Jun 30, 2010 1:33 am    Post subject: Question this can't be happening? Reply with quote

I just returned last Thursday from being gone all over the country because I enlisted in the United States Marine Corps last Dec.. so I'm super excited to have completed training and come home for some well deserved leave and drive my Imp around town. So two days before I return I get a call about my car... Sad

My mom told me that a rat/mouse went into the engine compartment and made a nest.. in doing so he ate a s**t load of cables.. o s**t was my thought..

She gave the phone to my lil brother and the way he explianed it.. it was nothing that the spark plug wires.. no biggie I'm at 95k anyways time for a tune up..

Nope that was it.. when I got home I popped the head and damn..

The rat ate an entire section the main wire harness that lays on top inbetween the intake manifold and valve cover.. this large bundle of cables wraps branches off in three directions.. down towards the radiator.., over to the coils and to the back of the engine.. alt and starter seems. Like..

Luckly all of these cables come in sections and have connections..

Can I buy these anywhere? Does my whole electrical system have to be redone?

The chevy dealership wants to soder it all together for lil over 500.. my luck right?

Thoughts...

check out morad parts. You could just get a used cable and replace the portions via connectors where it was eaten

I'd check the local junkyards, other than being eaten, cables seem to last a long time.

i bet a privately owned shop would do it. most likely cheaper than the stealership. another alternative maybe a junkyard harness.

Repairing large sections or lots of little sections will more than likely cause problems later on. Depending on how much and how bad, you may be better off getting a whole new harness.

I had to chase a woodchuck out of my Grandma's Dodge Dakota the other day, I'm worried he'll go up there and do the same thing!

When I took my engine cover off, I found a nice nest and some chewed wires... though I haven't replaced anything yet... maybe I really need to?

As long as your car is running OK,.. you should be fine. I would still repair or shield the wires though. Wink

Did you find the rat? If not, find it and fill it's bunghole up with some .223's.

BTW, congratulations on being a marine. Good Luck, and we all thank you for serving in the best part of the U. S. military and serving your country.
