I just scanned my 2002 Impala 3800 3.8L 100,000+ miles, and up popped CEL check engine code P0135.
Apparently, this is the first oxygen sensor (on the manifold - pre-CAT).

This is the first bad oxygen sensor I've ever had, and I just want to make sure I'm looking at the right O2 sensor; bank 1 sensor 1. This is a bit misleading, because the Impala appears to only have (2) O2 sensors.
One pre-CAT and one after CAT. Correct?
And the first sensor is actually located on the rear (firewall) manifold. Yes?

I see that our local experts recommend the ACDELCO Part # AFS109 {#19178958, 25312203}. Rock Auto $73 plus shipping.
Finally, do I need the special socket, or can I get it with a wrench.
It's down there a little ways.

Thanks...

His dog ran away and didn't come back for a few hours on the first fire up too. It was awesome.

When babies cry and animals flee, you know you did something right Laughing

I'm glad you reminded me. I did that for my plugs.

When I finally got around to changing the sensor. I had gotten the 7/8" slotted socket. Using a single swivel and a long extension, it came out very easy.

The problem was that the new ACDelco sensor was a little longer than the original, and wouldn't fit the socket. I ended up getting a $10 crow foot wrench from O'Reilly's to tighten it in.

No need to rock the 3.8L.
