I stumbled in here while searching for answers on our 2003 Impala LS with the appearance package. The car has 70,000 miles, the engine has +90,000 due to a swap last year. The car has been good, except for that, and the transmission beginning to exhibit problems. We like the size, power, and safety of the car, and want to keep it, as long as it stays reliable.
The engine swap was a nightmare! The upper intake gasket was found to be leaking, so it was repaired under a extended warranty at a local GM dealer. After a few months, the engine failed due to a bad bearing. After some investigation, shop paperwork indicated no fluid change after having the head off.
My local mechanic friend suspected that the coolant leak was probably causing internal damage, and not changing the oil after using a disk to clean the head, most likely allowed contaminants in the motor.
Anyhow, the used car lot where we bought the car agreed to pay some of the cost of replacing the engine, even though the warranty had expired. A used engine out of a wrecked Buick was installed with less than 100,000 miles, and the intake gaskets, and water pump were changed before installing. $1784 later ($700 paid by dealer).
Knock on wood, it seems to be doing well.
I'm going to post a question about the tranny in the other area soon.
