Anyone ever tow with their Impala? I know the trannys are crap, but curious if anybody has had any success towing either a PWC or maybe a tow dolly with a light FWD car. Laughing

I've towed a UHaul trailer from north Metro Boston to south of NYC and back, and from north Metro Boston to Gaithersburg, MD...so yes, it can be done. I wasn't running a scanner at the time, but I'm fairly certain the transmission got fairly hot since I'd be cruising in 4th gear and it would downshift to 3rd and drive in 3rd for a while before shifting back up to 4th.

Gas mileage sucked too (went from about 24-27 highway to something like 12-14), but I was towing a 900 pound trailer with probably about that much weight in crap in it as well (if not more) will do that to you.

..and with a "tranny cooler equipped" 9C1 too? Wow.

The external transmission and oil coolers didn't come out on the 9C1 until 2002 or later...I have a 2001 that only has a power steering cooler. Rolling Eyes

Not that it would really matter. The W-body isn't exactly designed to be a towing vehicle. Sure it'll do in a pinch, but I don't think I'd tow with my car unless I had no other option available.

I agree, but would not tow with a FWD at all.

no issues thus far and it's been 4 years. The hitch stays on year-round and the imp has made more than one home depot run with the 4x8 worktrailer. PWC, utility trailer, anything under a thousand lbs total weight ( trailer and load ) and you should be OK. Tranny coolers are always cheap insurance.

Yeah, I wouldn't tow with my Impala......not that I don't think the engine has the power, but the tranny and body just weren't meant for it. It's a car, it's meant to drive. I have a truck to tow and haul.

I tow on an annual basis...about 400mi each way through the mountains with a full utility trailer of camping gear and bikes. The 8 handles it just fine and the tranny seems to do OK with it as well. Gas mileage sucks when you're towing 1000lbs at 75mph+.

I use it once in a blue moon when I'm not vacationing, too, so the hitch stays on year-round. I had been putting it on only as needed, but that was causing damage to the rear frame...poking holes through the tube frame...so I stopped that and just left it on. I add a coat of black paint once in a while and it's barely noticeable, especially being lowered.

Well, it can't be any worse than towing with a Cavalier, which I've seen done frequently by a friend of mine. Confused Granted it was just a Four-wheeler.
