I've been having an intermittant problem for the past couple of months where the moter acts as if it wants to die while driving; sometimes it actually does die. I've noticed on most occasions when this happens that if I move and hold the ignition key to a slightly different position than its normal resting spot, that the problem will most often clear up (until next time of course!)

Today, as I'm attempting to head to church for our sunrise service, the engine kept dying within 1 or 2 seconds of being started. I must have tried 50 or 60 times,; sometimes I got it to run for maybe 5 seconds but never longer, and that was only by holding the key in a slightly different position in the switch.

Not sure what else I can tell you, but if further info is needed just ask.

How old are your keys? Any trouble lights showing in the instrument panel?

My guess would be your keys are worn down.

Keys wouldn't do that, but an ignition switch would. Sounds like the internal contacts are bad.

Thanks for all the different responses guys! Now which remedy to choose 1st...lol

I cleaned the MAF about a month or so ago, but that didn't appear to help. It really seems more to be the key or ignition switch, probably the switch as suggested. But at $160 to replace, that's gonna have to wait until next payday!

You can test the MAF by unplugging it. If the problem goes away... the MAF is bad.

Also FWIW: I got a new keyed ignition cylinder for ~100 bucks on eBay when I replaced mine.

I may try that when I leave work tonight. Only question is, will that cause other problems on my 20+ mile drive home? Or should I be OK?

It'll throw a CEL, but the engine will be running from different tables (I think it uses the VE tables and MAP sensor values or something... but I'm not entirely sure). Worst case scenario, it does something really wonky and you have to pull over and reconnect the harness.
