i have an 03 impala LS

3.8 V6 3800 series II
original trans

the car has 84k miles and has 20" rims with 245/35 lo-pro tires

if i use 93 Octane by the calculations of the MPG meter in the car... my Trip meter and the Gallons Used meter...

i am getting 20mpg city 30mpg highway....

is this good or is the rims causing the poorer milage?

my check engine light comes on ever so often and the code says Catalytic converter/ Other... so it could be just an O2 sensor cause the OBD-II reader at autozones doesnt tell you the exact problem

think if i put new plugs, new wires, new coil pack, new O2 sensors a new Catalytic Converter and SeaFoam the engine that it will improve my milage drastically?

or if i run it on 89 octane??? it doesnt run as good and im sure doesnt get as good milage.... or is it about the same?

A) don't waste your money on 93 octane. All you need is regular gas with an LS.

B) If you are actually getting 20/30 with 20" rims, thats impressive. Are you going by the DIC or are you calculating by hand?

C) An actual code might help us. But if it is a P0420, you need your cat repalced.

D) A tune up wont net an increase in MPG if you are indeed seeing 20/30. For reference, I get about 16 if I'm lucky with my stock wheels in the city.

this is what i am calculating with the MPG meter, Gallons used meter and trip

56.2 miles
2.1 Gallons Used

do the math and bam its actually not 20/30

but i got 24 miles with the 1st gallon in the city... and the other 32 miles on the highway ( 55-60mph)

my main reason for the tune up and the want to do the seafoam is this car sat for a while

When the code (light) is on i get like 16 mpg

Forget about what you do over a gallon of gas. You need to run a full tank and let us know what you are getting. Over a full tank of city I get 16ish, mixed driving nets between 20-22 and all highway I can see up to 35 depending on the ambient temperature.

Also, what the heck is an MPG meter? If you want an accurate MPG calculation reset your trip when you fill up, drive until you get the low fuel light and use the trip reading and the gallons required to fill it up to get your MPG.

I wouldn't trust the DIC, they are known to be off by plus or minus a few MPG.

ill do the full tank thing when i got some more cash XD..... as for how far i seen my needle move and the 56 miles i drove....... didnt move as much as i thought it would....

so im sure im getting pretty decent milage

cause even if those meters were 4mpg off thats still good milage 20/28

QUESTION ::::::::::

i noticed this recently or is this always normal...

i was driving my impala in heavy traffic and a lane opened up and i nailed the gas to the floor and went over 2 lanes then back over another and when i hit the gas and turned.. the car pulled the way i was turning.... like Pulling Hard... i used to dive a 1991 lesabre with the 170hp/220lb-ft 3800 and it never pulled like that and i used to drive it like a maniac

The fuel gauge is non linear. It will hardly move for the first 50 miles and then will go down faster and faster as you get closer to empty. It's got something to do with the shape of the gas tank.

As far as the pulling thing, you might be experiencing torque steer. But without being there, I can't say for sure.

My car is bone stock and if I'm lucky I get close to 18 MPG on city driving.

I get 16-24 on my 20"s... oh wait... Laughing

Gas mileage will drop 1-2mpg based on wheel mass, but its worth it for the look IMO. If you were that worried about mileage, you'd be driving a prius. Rolling Eyes
