Hi, everyone, I want to remove the MAF to clean it or if it's too bad replace it, I'm having bad gas mileage, the problem is I don't know how to remove the MAF sensor, and I don't want to break anything.
BTW what fuel injector cleaner do you recommend?

Thanks in advance.

Unplug, remove the two torx bits, lift straight up. Are you asking about the fuel injector cleaner to use on the MAF, or just in general. Use Maf cleaner for the MAF, I use Techron for the fuel system.

Would electronics cleaner work too?

That should be OK to use as well.

I'm partial to Seafoam myself for injector cleaner,.. or the GM stuff. But it's kinda pricey.

I just used some locking needlenose pliers to unscrew them, I did scratch the edges of the screws but not to where it would do any damage.

definitely get seafoam, even if it is a little expensive. i got some spray maf cleaner at kragen. a ton of white smoke came out after i drove with the seafoam. i did seafoam on my friends civic with 160k miles that had never had it done, there was a huge thick cloud of smoke when we drove it afterwards Rolling Eyes

I meant fuel injector cleaner for the injectors, I'm getting terrible gas mileage, like 15 or 16 on city driving, I will clean the MAF, and see if this makes any difference, also I want to clean the injectors, I have already replace the plugs & wires.

16mpg city is the average for the 3.8L you know right? and 26mpg freeway. of course it can go higher using cruise control.

Cruise control would actual lower your mpg and 16 mpg city 26 highway is terrible even for a 3.8 with 3.69s, much less 3.05s

I used to get nearly 30 mpg on highway and 19 on the city.

mine has been 22 city and 30-33 highway... The sticker sheet says 21 city 32 highway for the fuel mileage (of course that was back in 2001 since that's what mine is) 2 Cents

**edit** as far as those torx screws they are technically called tamper proof torx looks like this

Not sure where you are, but cold weather has a negative effect on mileage. My mileage has gone down about 2-3 mpg since winter hit. Cleaning the MAF should help if you've never done it. You may also want to look into cleaning the entire TB if you have never done that.

Did you replace them with AC/Delco (GM) plugs and wires? If not, that is probably part of your problem

You can pick up a tamper resistant torx set for pretty cheap at advanced auto. It's a folding key set like the way you find a lot of allen key sets.

Yes, Acdelco plugs & wires, (thanks Z-spot for the right PN).

I live in Tx, so there is practically no winter here, 30 once in a while, and yes I want to clean the TB I've never cleaned it before, although I'm just at 42K, how do I clean it?
