Just had to say thanks.
My 2006 Impala LT just started experiencing the classic symptoms related to the Intermediate Steering Shaft lubrication issues I have been reading about.
After reading related posts, I sprayed heavy duty penetrating grease into the shaft, following suggestions from your members.
I pulled the car out of the garage and the noises were gone!
We'll see how long the fix lasts, but at this point I have saved the cost of a new shaft (GM cost $115.00) or saved the couple of hours it would have taken to remove the shaft, lube it and reinstall it.
I have just registered as a new member of the NAIOA and plan on visiting your site often.
My first Impala was a beautiful black 1978, which was my first new car.
I bought the 2006 new and we love it.
I had that damn annoying clunk with my 06. I waited 2 months to take it in somewhere while it only got worse. I took it to local shop and mentioned it could be something in the steering. The guys couldnt figure it out. So I did some research and read all those posts on the web about the ISS being a common issue. So I called my dealer and asked them for a quote on lubing the shaft, they said they'd call me back. Got the call back they said just bring it in and they'll take care of it for me. So I took it in the next morning and was out of the dealer in an hour with a replaced shaft all for free, and my baby has never driven smoother.
