I have a buddy that is having a problem with his 2001 this is what he gave me.

HELP!

My check engine light recently came on in my 2001 Impala. I actually anticipated this for the following reasons....

I took about a 45 minute drive and my thermometer sat on dead cold the entire time. I found this strange, but no big deal. My heat worked fine and everything.

After parking the car and turning it off, I heard a hum, from the engine... opened the hood and the engine (or something around it) was blowing cold air furiously.... even with the ignition off.

It stopped after about 5 minutes.

The next day, drove my car into work and the thermometer stayed on cold... then the check engine light popped on.

What is going on....? Can I keep driving a bit until I find time to take it in?

THANKS!

Coolant temp sensor is bad, or wiring to the sensor is bad. If the PCM doesn't know the engine temp, it leaves the fans on high just in case.
Search, I don't think it's hard to change yourself, but I haven't done it. There are plenty of guys here who have, though.

I think Jayme hit the nail on the head. The PCM is going into a protection mode of sorts. FWIW, I had the dealer replace mine a while back (well before i knew of this website unfortunately) and it was a relatively cheap dealer visit (~150 bucks IIRC).
