My 2000 impala LA1 is in need of an oil change. This is my first oil change with the car. It just rolled over 85000 miles. Im going with conventional oil for now,(Penzoil) Would you suggest switching to a synthetic or is 85000 too late to do that? Thanks!

Search It's been discussed before, if you're not loosing a considerable amount of conventional you should be able to switch.

Well I searched oil change and went through a few pages, then I searched which oil to use. Looked through a few pages. I guess I will look through a few more pages next time. Sorry for bothering you.

But I think maybe mobil one will be a good idea, thanks all for the help. But If The engine starts sounding bad I will know that it is a no go on synthetic. Usually a pretty good sign.

I'm sure your engine will be more than happy to use mobil1, it will run smoother, cooler and silently.
The right viscosity is 5W30, for both 3.4 and 3.8

I use 5w30 Synthetic in my 2000 Impala and it has 235,000kms on it(146,000miles) and I bought it when it was at 211,000kms and it had never run with synthetic until I got it and it runs perfectly. Hope this helps.

w30 is the correct viscosity. The first number is the cold weather viscosity. You choose 0, 5, 10, or whatever based on the climate where you live.

My 2005 calls for 5W-30. Last oil change about two months ago, I switched to 0W-30. In both viscosities I used Mobile 1 synthetic. After switching to 0W-30, I noticed that the piston slap or valve train or whatever it is that ticks when it is cold, is now inaudable at start up. It is not that cold here, and today the temperature is like 60 outside.

Really, no piston slap????? I gotta try it, that noise is annoying big time. I live in a tropical climate would OW-30 work for me????
