ok guys the purpose of this post is two things. number one. show the difference in size between the regular oil filter and the over sized oil filter. so people can see and understand the size difference. i think just seeing the measurements doesn't do it justice.

purpose number 2 is to show my oil flush and how i did it. it was the simple, and said to be, safer way.

first up is my oil flush,

for my flushing oil. i chose not to use a solvent as i have been told it can be hard to get it all out, and in turn it will prematurely break down the new oil. so i just got a cleaning oil, put a new stock size oil filter on. ran it for about 100 miles, and then changed it to my new favorite oil with the over sized oil filter.

my flush oil

the winning end combo, royal purple, and the over sized filter.

now the difference between the stock size oil filter, and the over sized filter.

and finally my little helpers....

What brand of filters are those? fwiw, the Delco pf52 is slightly taller than the m1-201 Mobil oil filter.

Actually, since AC Delco changed the design of most of their fitlers, it's not as large as it used to be. It's about a 1/4" shorter than the previous version. Confused This is something farily recent so the old stock is probably what is still on the shelves at most stores.

Ahhh ok. Yeah I did the comparison at an Autozone so that may explain that! Smile

You can use an oil filter for a S-10/sonoma too, they look to be slightly bigger than the oversized one you have in the picture.

Yeah, whenever I go in to get an oil filter for the Impala or the Regal, I always request one for a 1998 Blazer with the 4.3L V6.

As long as it has a 4.3 it'll be the same.

The 2WD Blazer will come with the short filters, example :HP-1001
The 4WD will come with the longer filters, example: HP-2001 (K&N)

Edit:If you veiwing the advance auto parts website, they wont break it down between 2WD and 4WD but If you were to walk into Autozone, they would ask you 2WD or 4WD, they carry different sub menus at Autozone, representing what the OEM would have supplied.

The new AC Delco oil filters are soo cheap now. If you can find an old style AC filter you can see its THICK solid steel on top, and the inside filter retainer I guess you'd call it is perforated steel. The new styles are thin sheet metal on top, and plastic retaining the filter media. WIX is still good, and not too much more expensive.
I'm a WIX guy myself. But to each his own.
I can't remember the WIX cross reference from the pf-52 delco. or the pf-47.

No, but why not take advantage of having more media to filter your oil? Bigger is better, but not necessary.

Just in case anyone wanted to know the larger oil filter number is 3980....
It's the same filter application as the pf 52...
